So what does okra do to you when your pregnant? Am seriously craving some, and have read not to eat it, but don't know why.

different cultures different restrictions. In ours culture no pineapple, papaya, jackfruit.ocra for 9 months. also during first trimester avoid eggs and nuts of every sorts. so since i am a vegeatrian i had to take artificial protien in form of protein powder...i love pineapple and so far just smell it :) also mascoporne cheese and any other cheese of soft nature. edited by manubhadauria on 02/02/2012

Thanks , I am too, avioding the raw and undercooked meats and eggs. Am cautious with cheeses ( really hard for me) and fresh juices. Last pregnancy I didn't know about the infection risk from take out hommos and the fresh juice and binged on both, luckily all was fine...Chocolate also has caffein in it so I have non of that as well, did that last time too and for some reason child hated chocolate for the longest time(maybe that was why). I am more interested in the foods that aren't originally (for lack of better term) "european" like for example exotic fruit and vegetables. at first one would think that fruit and vegetables are good for you, but often you read not to eat pineaple, mangoes and papaya and ocra while pregnant. Same goes for even comomn spices like cinnamon, rosemary and cloves and others. Or dates. I am always a bit hesitant at the moment when we eat out, because of the spices, are there certain dishes to avoid in indian or thai cuisine for example.

Basically avoid anything pre-packaged because you don't know how well it has been washed or how long it has sat so no salad/raw vegies at restaurants/cafes, no cold meats from the supermarket. Things like feta if made from pasteurised cheese are ok "if" you have just broken the seal on the packet or you have heated them up to piping hot. Also rice should be freshly cooked (no cold rice salad) and humous should be freshly made (so if you've just made it yourself you should be fine). Eggs need to be well cooked or else pasteurised. fresh mayonaise/Aoli with raw unpasteurised eggs is a no-no but the stuff in a bottle from the supermarket is generally pasteuried so its ok.All of this stuff is to avoid the risk of listeria/salmonella which is higher during pregnancy and can be quite dangerous. Besides that, keep caffeine to a minimum (caffeine is in cola, coffee, tea and even in green tea). Be wary or herbal teas, some things like chamomile are not recommended. Licorice can effect blood pressure, salt can cause water retention, alcohol is an obvious no-no as are cigarettes, cigars and shisha. They said no nuts for a while but recently changed this advice as it did not prevent allergies in children. Pretty much try not to binge on anything and eat at home/prepare fresh as much of your food as possible otherwise you'll end up eating greasy fried foods as they are all that is "safe".

That's a tricky one, I've learned each culture has different diet restrictions. I'm 20 weeks with my second and have mainly tried to avoid alco, raw meat and fish. Also, I try to eliminate all unpasteurized dairy and juice products. Due to the Listeria threat which is a rare condition and not all pregnant pay much attention to it. As an avid cheese eater I eat all hard cheese and soft cheese made from pasteurised milk. My favorite, the Blue Stilton I have not found from pasteurised milk tho. I miss it intensely, the second important thing I miss after the obvious wine and beer :) During my previous pregnancy I didn't know about the possibility of Listeria in raw juice, and back then I drank it occasionally without getting Listeriosis. Now I'm limiting this a bit more, not fully though. Raw fruit and veggies I try to wash as good as possible and especially in the first trimester I limited eating raw veggies in restaurants to lessen the possibility to get tummy bugs... I I've restricted nuts a bit (allergy discussion), and try not to eat the oily fish more than once a week due to the mercury discussion. I recently heard that Hummus may contain Listeria as well and I hate to know it TBH. Why on earth did I have to google it. I try to avoid Light drinks, artificial sweetener discussion. Well, each to their own. Just eat what you are used to, google all you are doubting and I wish you a healthy pregnancy!

Just curious. With diet restrictions I mean those besides avoiding raw meat and eggs. Just remembered from last time, that there is so much stuff that's not supposed to be good, were others again say it is perfectly fine. How do you keep it with pineaples, bananas, dates , spices, chocolate, herbs and simila)r? Anything you wouldn't eat while pregnant?( i only read about the pineaples after having a serious craving attack and devouring 3\4 of a pineaple all by myself and then googling.... baby was fine by the way, and a week late.)
