Myself and my husband are thinking of starting a family, it would be great if I could ask any mum's out there for any books that they have read, internet sites that you thought that may have been useful for you when you were thinking of starting to have a family. I did go into Borders recently but I was just toooo confused on to what book I should buy that would give me any general advice on family planning, development on the child, what i should consider before trying for a baby and so on.... Please help!!!!!

I second Kaz Cooke's book and also 'what to expect when expecting'. I found Kaz Cooke helpful but not too much information overload. Also used babycentre.co.uk as well and the .com one. Also looked at NHS direct for the pregnancy slides and general pregnancy info. I also read the baby whisperer and took lots of useful tips from that.

If you're the kind of person who likes a bit of comedy in your educational reading, "up the duff" is brilliant, I also loved the book "oh baby" by Kathy Fray which is like a baby-book if it was dicatated to you by a good friend rather than the detached clinical (but still informative) tone of books like "what to expect..", it uses words like t*ts and b*m which clearly make it literary genius ;) the babycentre.com website send you weekly emails when pregnant (and after) which are really informative and has lot of info if you are trying to conceive. <em>edited by kiwispiers on 11/08/2011</em>

Just be aware that no book is going to be spot on, no book is going to describe exactly your experience (to come) and you can read the whole library full and then find it was all rubbish! lol Loved Kaz Cooke's book! And you can also read all the books and forget everything you read when your LO is here or find putting it into practise just isn't as easy as the book makes it sound!

My 'Bible' while pregnant was "What to Expect When You're Expecting" Has pretty much all the questions you would ask when pregnant. It breaks your pregnancy down to months and has all the info on what your baby is doing growth wise for that month. I found it really helpful. I also brought the "What to Expect First Year" but haven't used it as much. It breaks down your child's first year into months and lists what your baby might be doing that month , tips on baby care etc. BabyCenter.com is a useful website. It has lots of great info plus videos you can watch. I made DH sit down and watch a few birthing ones with me and had him cringing and feeling sorry for me! huggies.com.au was another website I used alot. Good luck!

Trendy Bee, there is a website with a wealth of info where you can also subscribe to their newsletters and they send you updates of what you should be feeling/experiencing during your each week of your pregnancy and into the baby's life too www.babycentre.com During pregnancy I read 'What to expect when you are expecting' by Heidi Murkoff which seems to be everyone's bible. Now that DS is born I also have read the Secrets of the Baby Whisperer by Tracy Hogg which seems to suit my LO perfectly well - it talks about how to deal with your baby through his daily routine and also from a psychological perspective. When he was born I bought New Babycare by Miriam Stoppard which is OK for the basics but doesn't address as many topics as Hogg's book. There are a few advocates of the Gina Ford books out there but after reading a few reviews I was put off as it seems too strict and guided by the clock rather than by your baby's and your lifestyle needs. We also have bought the Brilliant Baby series of DVD/VCDs which we are already showing our LO, not that he understands them but it helps him focus his eyes as it shows the simple shapes, colours, etc. A friend also recommended Baby Einstein. <em>edited by twin_butterfly on 11/08/2011</em>
