My LO is due in October and dh and I are keen to travel in December, which passport process is quicker the Australian or British? Also could I speed up the process by a family member taking the application rather than going through the oz consulate in Dubai or posting to Germany for the uk one.

We got our DSs passport done here via the Oz consulate and is was very quick. We used Baby Steps (www.babystepsdubai.com) to obtain the birth certificates (Arabic and English copies). They have a 3 day turnaround on this otherwise for an extra 100dhs they will do it in 24hrs. They pick up and deliver from your home. Once you know the return date, just make an appointment at the consulate and take your application in. Make sure you have EVERYTHING with you (including witness signatures as they wont witness it for you - we ended up getting a random fellow Aussie guy to sign for us!!!) otherwise they will send you away. We got the passport within a week and then we were able to send the passport in to HQ for the residence visa which takes a little longer but you'll be fine by December. Good Luck!

Our UK one for a newborn was within a week. You have plenty of time, apply for both and use whichever arrives first :)

We got DD's British one in about three weeks back in February. You can't get it done in the UK unless the person applying for the passport is physically there when the application is made :(. But I'm sure I read on here someone was able to get an emergency travel document for their baby to leave the UAE and go to the UK then get their passport there.

A friend of mine got her kids Aussie passports within 1 week via the consulate in Dubai. This was probably a renewal but was very fast! I hope it is this fast for everyone because I have to get DH's one done shortly. I have got Aussie and UK ones for my kids but got them all done via Australia when we were living there. Both were super fast - 1 week for the Aussie ones and only about 10 days for the British ones which included postage to UK both ways. I think if you have a full month you should be okay to get either (or both)! Assuming you have all of the documents ready to go.
