hi JS I see a chiropractor regulalry and in Oz I had the best guy who is also studying to be a paed. He advised that a baby carrier (sling type) was best whilst baby could not support it self. Until it can support itself sitting then the Baby Bjorn or the Ergo should not be used as there is great pressure put on the spine (as mentioned below). We purchased the new Baby Bjorn Comfort Carrier which is somewhat thicker than the BB Synergy or regular BB. It is too thick (i think) for the weather here in summer) but suitable as a carrier when they reach about 5 mths 9-12kgs. It has a waist band support so the weight of the baby is not just being carried through your shoulderblades, it is also carried via your waist (more even distribution). Also, it has 2 positions, the regular legs dangling down - baby straight position or wider sit position similar to the Ergo. I bought mine off e-bay and got a great deal on a red one - it was about half the price of the black. so this may be something to think about for later down the track but certainly for a NB go a sling. Hope you find what you are looking for!

Thanks for all the info. I went to MC just to try what they had. Discovered that there brands where not easy at all to put on on your own. I think I like the look of the Moby wrap, any ideas where you can get one from ie shops here? Again would like to try it if poss.

Hands down got to be the MOBY WRAP for this age group (IMHO anyways). Tried loads with my firstborn, maya/bjorn/mamasmilk etc. But when DD came along we used the MOBY from day one + we both love it + I fervently wished I'd found it sooner for first time around. Very contented bub, at first sign of a whimper in the evenings if she felt a bit of colic, straight into the moby + then str8 off to sleep, Marvellous :) I like the ERGO too now that she is 9 months (already, ahh!) Wasn't comfortable using the ERGO even with the insert until she was over 8.5Kgs. You can bend down, lean over + still be hands free when using the Moby because the baby's head is securely supported. Big plus point also is that strangers can't be tempted to touch your little one as you can hide them away :) They are upright so no worries about breathing being hampered. Downsides to Moby is that it's a big piece of fabric + if you're putting it on outdoors it may trail a bit on the floor. Downside to ERGO is the putting it on isn't quite as easy as putting on the Bjorn. But both the MOBY + ERGO are better fr the bubs spine as they aren't hanging with fabric between their legs. In the moby + ergo their bottoms are cupped + they are in a sitting position. Brought my Mobys (I have 2) from Dubizzle. Moby feels so snug it's like being pregnant with them again but better because you can see their face :)

Thanks for the suggestions, where can you get a ergo or a close baby carrier here? I'd like to try it on before buying. Do Mothercare or Mama's and Paps's have any carriers? Are they any good? You can order the Ergo from Babysouk.com. I got one from there after I lost my old one on the plane. I was very happy with their service. I think they also participate at the baby-wearing meetings. Then you could try one out. If you're using a sling for a tiny baby, it should be laying down. That's the best position when they cannot sit up. But my DD never liked that very much, so the Ergo was perfect for us.

You're welcome to try my Close but it'll be arriving with my sister on March 16 - that might be a bit too much of a wait for you.

Tmac - I have a sling which is great used it with DD but only from 5/6months when she could kind of sit in it and it was great, I'm not happy putting my DS in it as he is sooo little at the moment, but later on I will use it again. Thanx edited by JShepherd on 07/02/2011

Have you considered a baby sling? I find them far more comfortable, especially with young babies. There is a baby wearing workshop in the Organic Cafe in the Dubai Mall...next one is February 24th 9:30-11:30am, then again April 7th same times. I would highly recommend for you to check it out, lovely ladies show there all kinds of different slings and you can even try them out!

Ergo carrier can be used with an infant insert for small babies (up to 3 months old). It positions the baby much more ergonomically correct than the Baby Bjorn. The Baby Bjorn is too narrow at the crotch area and puts too much pressure on baby's spine. With a sling or the Ergo the legs are supported all the way to the knee and spread wider apart. This helps prevent any damage to spine and hips. And it is also very, very comfortable for the parent. I still carry DD in it for hours and she's over 10kg now.

I had a Baby Bjorn Synergy and a Close baby carrier. Both were good but for tiny babies, I think the Close was better. They're super-snug up against you and the carrier is just a soft, stretchy cotton. I'm not sure if you can get them here, though - sorry, that doesn't help much, does it?!

I love my hug-a-bub - my SIL ordered it for me online from www.luxe.com :) Compact and light-weight and you can use it until they're toddlers! Otherwise, when my LO is bigger I'll be using my baby bjorn - if you're going to buy one, I'd recommend getting one with the extra lumbar support.
