Hi everyone,
Tried to add this to another thread but for some reason I can't...
I'm not due till May but will be having my baby shower early so that Mum can be there when she visits. My big question: what do you ask for from friends for the baby shower?? We haven't bought anything yet and was going to wait to buy the big stuff in the Shopping Festival. I've always found it hard to ask for things - especially when potentially there's a lot of money involved (our wedding registry was chaos!).
Any suggestions of what you have asked for/got/wanted are appreciated.

I had my shower arranged by my best friend and my DH.... had it on 14th Dec... They had send out invites with gift registries at Just kidding( on-line) and Mothercare (dubai Mall).Guest list was 60+ , so huge list! The items put on registry( by my frnd as she is an experienced Mum):- Bath thermometer, Room thermometer. portable bath tub travel bottle sterilise/normal steriliser Growbags/snuggle pods Play mats Baby bouncers Baby monitoring wireless system Blanket sets Crib mobiles Bath set(with anti slip) Breastfeeding boppy Bottle drying rack Diaper bag Bath essential set( towels etc) Bib sets Thats all I can remember....post shower I got 80% of what was on registrty items and loads more which was never listed!

a baby shower is like a party usually a month or 2 before the baby is born... someone usually hosts it for you and you have have little snacks and play games and open gifts... it is becoming more common now for people to have couple showers where men are invited as well but it traditionally was for women. you add all the things you need to a baby registry at a store and then when your host sends out the invites the store you are registered at is listed on the invitation... then that person will go to that store and buy something for you that is on your list, the store then removes the item so the next person ideally doesn't buy the same thing.... not sure if they have baby registries here or not or if you have to be a little more inventive like someone said with the spread sheet... but you can go to babies r us website (the us one) and it has a list of things new moms "should" register for... although you may not be able to get the exact items you see on line here it can still be a starting point for you to get an idea of what to put on your wish list... i put everything i needed on my registry (i went to the states for my second sons shower and brought everything back with me) so i didn't register for a stroller or furniture... but everything else i did, had i not been bringing it all back with me i would have registered for the big items as well... play mat, bouncer, baby monitor, soaps and lotions, blankets bibs burp rags, passy, thermometer, clothes, toys etc... if you think you need it put it on your list :)

I am slightly confused about the concept of a baby shower, is this in place of visiting you (and bringing a gift) once the baby has been born? Do you organise it yourself? I love my friends but I don't think they will think of organising one as I am the first of us to have a baby. Is it ladies only, or do the men and the father get involved too? I also (personally) would feel quite strange at asking for big ticket items, although I suppose it's possible for people to chip in together.

Can't remember every item but here were a few Isofix base for car seat Car seat Car seat summer cover A blanket from mamas and papas Some pram toys Other toys A bouncer A play mat (ended up getting 3 because some people brought gifts after) Moses basket and stand Sling Some clothes These are items I remember getting from my list. The bigger items were from groups of people or family/close friends, the smaller ones were from individuals.

Like with any registry put things from every price bracket so that people don't feel obliged to spend more than they'd like to. Cheaper items would be things like muslins, bibs, swaddles, mid range maybe sleeping bags, cot sheets, steriliser and higher range things like breast pump, cot, change table, baby monitor, pram, car seat etc. Try and have the majority in low-mid range as obviously thats mostly what people will buy. I never had a registry for my baby shower, I think it depends a bit where you come from as to whether its the "done" thing or not, always good to have an informal list at the very least though for anyone who asks. The best gifts I got were a large ikea playmat and large (1.2 x 1.2 m) muslin swaddles. Whether you ask for them or not you will get loads of clothes for the 0-3 months age range (especially from people who don't have babies of their own) so when you are shopping yourself don't buy too many.

I put most things on there. We'd already done the big tickets like pram, furniture etc but besides that everything from car seat to onesies went on there. Made an excel sheet with the item, store and price and gave it to my sister who was organizing my shower. She sent it around as people asked (not unless they asked tho). Some of them were individual gifts and some were gifts from a few people combined that's why I put even the more expensive ones on there. My sister kept the list updated. And what was left on there after the shower, we bought.
