My baby is currently one month old and has gotten into the habit of sleeping at my breast. Whenever I feed him he feeds for 5 - 7 mins tops and then drifts off into a slumber. I've tried everything I can think off......skin to skin, ticking him, talking, moving him, changing positions etc but nothing wakes him up enough to suck properly enough to fill his tummy. He then will sleep for like 15 min and then wakes up crying hungry obviously becz his tummy is not full. That's how he drifts off to sleep at night too....and I'm trying to make him sleep with a dummy instead so he doesn't get used to this way of sleeping at night esp. but currently he seems to stick it out and win this battle.

any helpful suggestions on how I can overcome these two issues?

I had this problem. you need to get mean! Take his clothes off and make him a bit cold. Change his nappy between sides. Cold cloth on bottoms of feet. I had to do all of this as I had a very small, sleepy baby who just fell asleep.

Give up on the dummy, my son loved it from day one, my daughter refused it outright no matter how much we tried. I think he'd take it by now if he was ever going to. Also you need to be confident weight gain is string before offering the dummy instead of a feed.

I would contact an experienced board certified lactation consultant and get them to asses him while feeding to see if he is effectively transferring milk. I would also get them to check for anything that could make it hard for him to suck effectively like tongue tie. Frequent small feeds are very normal and in many ways easier on both your breasts and their tummies but sometimes it is the case that there is something physical; jaundice, poor latch, reflux etc that can affect how they nurse and sleep so it's always worth seeing a properly trained expert. There is a list of breastfeeding support in the family section of EW.

It's probably a growth spurt. The fact that he's wanted to eat so frequently suggests that. Nurse through it.

It is normal for small baby, I would i advice you to breastfeed on demand, and be carefull with pacifer, as it may affect your milk supply. After few weeks, your baby will stay awake longer and longer. :) I would suggest get some books, as later you will not have time to read ;) My LO also stay on my beast formost of the time unlull he was 4 months.
