Does anyone's baby had to use a helmet?

My 6 months old baby is diagnosed with flat head (google calls it positional plagiocephal) by the technician in Welcare hospital who'd like us to put a helmet on him for 23 hours in a day. My husband is worried that our son may hate the helmet. I'm worried that my son will turn into a handsome young man albeit with an oblique skull. My mom says there were no helmets when she had had her children and the flat head corrected on its own with time as the skull grew and hair grew on it.

Can the flat head be corrected without the usage of a helmet (through changing sleep positions?) Technician said it'll cost us a dear 7000 AED.

Both my twins have this problem, although its prominent in one. (Twins and premie babies are believed to be more prone to flat head)

hi.. may i know if you went for the helmet treatment for your babies and if it was effective.? my 8 month old son has also been diagnosed with positional plagiocephaly. i am not sure if the helmet will be effective as i feel the reasons given by the doctors are not convincing.

How is your kid now? I face the same problem with my son nowadays (he's 5 months old). Do you recommend it?

I cannot understand how anyone could helmet a baby 23 hours a day, let's be fair would really take it off for one hour, my two boys had this and it sorted itself out gradually, enjoy your precious baby...

My son was also diagnosed with plagiocephaly at around 4 months. Like you, we hoped it would self-correct but it really is hard to keep a baby staring in one direction all the time or after having spent so long to get him to fall asleep have to risk waking him up just because you need to turn his head! We made the decision to helmet him at 6 months and he wore it until he was a year old. This was all in America so the hospital, brand, etc. would be irrelevant But as far as the experience goes, I would do it all over again if I had to. Babies are incredibly resilient and will adapt to almost anything. After a couple days my son didn't even realize he was wearing one. And you can decorate them with cute decals too :) 23 hours/day sounds about right but its a graduated process. Meaning a couple hours on the first day, a few more on the second, etc. until parents and baby are used to it. The fact is that he will live with his head his whole life, but this is just a small window in his life to try all you can do to correct it. Good luck with whatever you choose to do!

It was quite a while ago now and the surgeon at Medcare who initially advised us has left. He referred us to Limbtech in Healthcare City they custom made the helmet, perhaps give them a call they will be able to help you.

My youngest DS was fitted for a helmet at 4 months and wore it more or less 23 hours a day until he was 9 months. He didn't know any different so was fine wearing it, it's just not ideal in the Dubai climate although it's now winter so not so bad. The problem can in some cases resolve itself but I wasn't prepared to take the risk and 6 months isn't too old as it is fixable anytime up to between 8-12 months old when the scull closes the timing differs from child to child. I would be thinking about whether it is a minor or serious case, and definitely get another opinion, but don't delay if you want something done as now is the crucial time.

Perhaps go and see Dr Gary Fitzgerald, 043484406. He's a well known and often recommended chiropractor who deals with pregnant women and babies. i know that up to a point ( before the skull plates fuse), he can help, but 6 months may be to old - I'm really not sure. He's very gentle and won't touch your baby until he's explained to you what he wants to do and why. Very reassuring and very effective.
