DC just to add my experience, for us it was just an 'age thing'. When DD was really little, she just hated the car seat and would scream if the journey was longer than say 10-15 minutes. She would also start screaming in her stroller - we would make it half way round the block before she would start screaming and we'd have to take her out of the stroller (she was fine once we picked her up). But once she was around the 5-6 month mark (from what I recall) she just didn't seem to mind it as much and it all got much easier. I think she just wanted to be close to mama and maybe didn't like being restrained in the car seat and it made her feel insecure, but as she got older she was fine. I remember I would read posts on here and there were some babies who still hated their carseats at age 2 and I was really worried she'd be like that, but thankfully she grew out of it!! Hope the same happens for you!
The car only has Isofix on the outside seats :(.
I haven't had her weighed in a while and she's due her jabs (or rather, overdue!) so I'll get her checked for reflux at the same time. Thanks for all the suggestions, I really appreciate it :).
I would check into reflux. My youngest son was like this in his car seat and stroller until I started him on solids. A little rice cereal and he was like a different baby!
DS probably would hold her hand if he could reach (and probably try and pull her socks off, too) but he's on the other side so too far away :(.
Where can I get a white noise CD from and any recommendations?
just download a white noise track and burn to disk, can you move one of the carseats to the middle, that way DS can put the dummy back in too.
Hi DubaiCat
My DS was exactly the same - absolutely hated being in his car seat. Looking back I realise it was probably because he wanted to be held by me all the time, especially in the first 4 months. It took that long for him to nap on his own, rather than on me, for example.
Perhaps your little one is the same and doesn't like the seperation from you.

I saw a carseat on the Britax site that allows them to lie flat but I'm hesitant to shell out for another seat when I'm not sure what's causing the yelling. And she's flat in the pram and still screams in there so I'm not sure it'd help anyway. She's happy to be flat when she's in my arms!
I guess I just have a little diva on my hands. She must get that from her father's side of the family :D.

Babies def do get carsick, DS started vomiting on car rides from around 9 months (major nightmare given the number of roundabouts we have to deal with and stoppy-starty nature of driving here.) but if the worst part is when you are stationary then maybe thats not it. Unfortunately if it is travel sickness then giving toys, DVDs etc makes them sicker and there isn't really anything you can give them at their age in terms of meds. I doubt she'd get motion sickness in the pram though.
With DS we always assumed it was the heat (our car has no AC in the back and he was born in August, but in retrospect I think it was maybe reflux. The car-seat puts them into a hunched position that really aggravates reflux, so maybe you should consider silent reflux if she doesn't tend to vomit much.
Nothing much you can do though, obviously you need to keep her in the carseat, is she lying flat in the pram? that would be better than the hunched maxi-cosi position. If she is only happy when in the baby-bjorn then that also could be an indicator for reflux, but then again it could just be that she is a baby that likes mummy to be close by. Keep persevering with the dummy in the car, it was a life saver for us and once he had better muscle control the reflux went and he was also happier in his carseat, not sure if the two were connected or not. Try and avoid a massive feed right before a car trip and give her a good burping before you put her in. Any chance you can convince your little DS to hold her hand during road trips? Also a white noise track in the MP3 player might help soothe her (and block the noise a bit for you too ;) )
my lil girl used to get both carsick and annoyed at being tied down in her car seat... and someone on this forum (four years ago!) suggested a portable DVD player...
as much as I didn't like the idea of her being dependent on a screen... the distraction SURE helped!! she started with baby einstein dvds... and then progressed to barney and dora and now that she's five... she's quite happy just looking out of the window or listening to the same music as we do! :)
worth a try in my opinion! :)
Maybe it is motion sickness, as it seems we can add buggy nightmares to the title :(. I bought a double and I think I just wasted my money! She screams after only a minute or two in the buggy and I end up with her in the Baby Bjorn.
Maybe if I wrap those bands around her wrists twice they might fit?!
Do babies get carsick?
Yes I think they do as my little guy (6.5 months) always throws up a bit while in the car or as soon as you get him out of the car. I'm lucky though as he's pretty laid back so doesn't scream like his sister used to. No amount of ignoring stopped her screaming either. By the time she was 3 months old though I had learnt to block it out. My dad who was on holiday out here at the time can still remember her screaming the whole way up SZR and back 3 years later :) we all laugh about it now.
Why has 'add reply' moved to the right?! :\:
Thanks ladies. It's literally driving me up the wall :(. I've tried giving her a dummy but she's not too good at keeping it in - if I manage to get it in, get her sucking on it and zoom off sometimes we're OK, but it's an art!
Can you get those seasickness band things in tiny sizes?
Do babies get carsick?
It may be "testing" or disliking being restrained as suggested by others, but I do think that babies [u'>can[/u'> get carsick-- my daughter (now 6.5 yrs and still prone to carsickness) screamed/cried the whole way up the mountain on our first vacation (age 2 months), and on other journeys not in straight lines. I think that this was due to carsickness especially as car seats at that age are rear facing. It continued to be an issue on certain types of roads and improved greatly once the car seat was swapped to be front-facing. Even now she can't sit in a rear-facing seat on a train!
We did speak to her paediatrician but unfortunately there's not much to be done... I find that sucking on something helps (even now we give her sugar-free hard sweets on at-risk journeys).
Good luck!
I truly believe that babies are a lot smarter than we think they are, and my guess is that your LO is just testing you and you need to be strong and ignore it. My first child used to scream endlessly in the car seat, and did it for about 2 months and i just ignored her, and eventually she just stopped when she realised that I wasn't going to give her any attention. Since then she has never had any issues sitting in her car seat at all, and she now loves it (she's 4 and refuses to sit in the car without her car seat).
My advice is basically just try and be strong about it. I know it's tough and distracting, but by no means stop the car and soothe her as you're just making it tougher for yourself in the future. It's a phase that I'm sure will pass, and then it'll just be a distant memory...

Sorry DC my little girl was exactly the same, she didn't get better until she was about 18 months and I had to go to school 3 times a day too. She just hated being restricted in her car seat I think. It took us 3 hours to get to Al Ain Zoo once because we had to stop so often to settle her. It was a nightmare for my little boy as he hated her screaming. Oh the joys, she now regularly says 'do you remember when I was a sweet little baby?' we all look at each other and think we all remember the screaming! :) She's a little angel now.
My DD is exactly the same. Crying her lungs away despite the others trying their best to entertain her. I thought it was the carseat but when it's on the buggy there is no issue whatsoever. I got a little mirror but no difference. She has a few toys that she likes but no difference. I just think she. Doesn't like it, my other kids LOVED the car & would sleep.
Music up loud or singing made up songs with her name in it lol if I stop n comfort her she starts again the minute we drive again so I don't stop now as it was making our journey longer. We have to go to school 3 times a day too. O the joys!!!
DD hates the car.
I posted the other day about learning to manage the two of them and said if I'm lucky she nods off in the car. Well, since then, she's given up nodding off in the car and usually screams the whole way. If a miracle happens and she's quiet, she screams as soon as we stop at lights. Aside from the noise giving me a headache, it's becoming dangerous because it's distracting me and I end up having to turn the music up to try and drown her out so I can concentrate on the road. Loud music + screaming baby + Dubai drivers = not a good idea. Not to mention it can't be fun for her :(.
Do babies get carsick? Or is it likely to be that she's uncomfortable in the car seat? She's in a Cabriofix with the newborn insert still in there. I just can't see any other reason why she'd scream the whole time we're driving anywhere. And I'm getting to the point where I dread going anywhere. The air turns blue when lights go red!
Any ideas?
