I'm full of the questions today...

Travelling from Toronto and stopping over in Dubai on a lonnnng flight home with my 21 month old because my dad's ill. And don't have a lot of time to research all this so hoping some of you will have the answers.

1. Do you all take your toddler car seats with you on your trips? Found a light-ish one to buy here and am happy to because it takes the guess work out of things but do they let you take it on the flight with you? I have bumped myself up to biz class on a 380 (booked a bassinet seat because my little girl is fairly small, still within the weight limit technically, whether she'll stay in it is a whole other Q), no point getting a second seat on there anyway - its like a diff city! My next leg though is on economy, still one seat so wondering if I can take it in as hand luggage (have a bag and can pack some other stuff in it and skip hand luggage, barring my purse).
2. The last long flight we took she freaked out and screamed for 8 out of 14 hours so i'm quite concerned. I think it was her ears. They bother her even normally and wax builds up easy. Any tips for how to prevent a scream fest and soothe any ear troubles, as well as keep her entertained? She doesnt take a soother, cant be made to drink things unless she wants to. Entertainment wise i'm taking an iPad and a few toys but she bores easy and is hyper energetic like most toddlers!
3. Booked 21J with bassinet... is that a good one? Where does the bassinet fit? My last round on a 380 we had an extra seat vacant which they offered us so didnt use one (too bad she was too busy freaking out to use it and stayed awake the entire 14 hours :D)!
4. And the big question, how do you get your LOs to sleep? Mine needs total darkness and white noise and no distraction AND takes an hour to wind down to sleep and as I said can keep going if things don't add up for her *shudder*
5. How do I calm down :D... can you tell I'm freaked out? Really... what gave me away ;)

Thanks ahead!

At 21 months I doubt your daughter will fit in a bassinet, even if she is under the 11kgs, she has to fit in length wise. If the flight is empty and there is a seat, the crew will not bother you about bringing on the car seat. Although if the flights empty, she'd be a lot more comfortable laying on the flat bed 380 seat. And you wouldn't have to bother carrying a carseat and a child off the aircraft. I find an Ergo baby carrier invaluable for getting off the plane, as toddlers tend to collapse on landing (after so many hours awake) and they are really heavy with bags. I would move to a K seat so she is trapped in beside you (mine curled up in the footrest and I blocked the light out with a tent made with a blanket over the top) or hope to get what Emirates calls a sweetheart seat (E or F) and hope the seat beside you is empty. 21J is near the aisle and has people walking past from the bar all the time, which kept my LO awake. Also don't travel in a seat in row 21+ as the closer you are to the bar, the noisier and brighter it can get. Good luck :) Thanks a ton flydiver! Didn't get what you said at first but went and looked at the flight seat chart and it makes total sense! Booked 9E. The only other available window one was 25K which is much too close to the bar which under other circumstances would've been a plus. Sigh! Im guessing none of that for me on this trip :)! The car seat wasn't so much for her to sleep in as to restrain her while she sits - remind her of car rides and keep her quiet with books/videos for short times. Got a back pack for the seat. Will give it a shot and at worst gate check it they refuse. Thanks again ladies.

I asked about the car seat as soon as I entered the plane at the door, at that point they didn't even know I had booked an additional seat for the baby and they still said yes. Emirates are usually very accommodating. To be on the safe side, I would get the seat tagged at check-in just in case they say no and then it can go down into the storage with the pushchairs, but I would be very surprised if they said no. Good luck, don't stress about the LO and have a safe flight :-)

Thanks a ton ladies. This is all great. I know I'm stressed out with the long flight alone with her for the first time and worrying about my dad. Must find way to relax! The flight leaves here at night, past her bedtime so lets see what happens. Going to take some duct tape with me and tape blanket across and slightly over the seat to hopefully prevent her from seeing goings on! The last time i noticed she freaked out each time we tried to get her to sleep and seemed distracted otherwise. So play it is if thats what works. Just gets awfully worked up if shes sleepy and tired. Like mama :D 1. Does anyone know if theres a chance of taking the car seat on board without the booked seat? Emirates policy does say its allowed if you have a seat but doesn't expressly say no otherwise. So wondering if anyones gotten away with it because the flights seem empty according to the call centre. Only concerned really for the second, economy leg because she just wont sit by herself that far away now. Not in a strange place. 2. Has anyone tried any natural sleep aids. Tried antihistamine and she seems to be one of the 1% that gets hyperactive because of it!

I remember one flight I did with my toddler, because it was an early hours flight I battled with her to get her to sleep and she whinged and cried and wasn't happy at all. Maybe she could sense the stress from me trying to get her to sleep. Anyway, after that flight I vowed never to go through that again and I basically let her do what she is happy with (within reason!). So if she wants to watch tv, she does. If she wants to watch the ipad, she does. If she wants to walk around the plane for an hour, she does. And you know what? The flight went fast, it was stress free and she even went to sleep by herself! So the moral to my story is don't stress, remain calm and go with the flow. I wish you the best of luck :)

Remember that they can sense fear ;-) Also remember that you will never see the people on the plane again so tell yourself that you don't really care what they think! Must haves I have found are - 1. Wax earplugs (the swimming kind). They seal better and help with the pressure. 2. LOTS of snacks 3. Many little toys individually gift wrapped and doled out one at a time. 4. Ipad & books 5. have a go at the games on the in flight entertainment 6. Mummy, make sure you are rested & have eaten well and do go in expecting that you will not be able to eat or rest or fly like the pre-lo days. I've found that managing my own expectations gets me less frustrated. Good luck!

My bottom line for traveling on long flights with infants/toddlers, you can't control their behaviour, so just do your best to make it as minimally disruptive to the rest of the passengers as possible. We traveled almost 24 hours on our move here due to flight cancellations. My 2.5 year old slept MAYBE 4-5 hours of the entire trip. It was HORRIBLE. But, there's nothing you can do about it. It's completely out of your control. So just embrace it, know you can't control it, and make do as best you can. If it annoys the other passengers, that's out of your hands, too. It's purely survival mode, in my opinion. Good luck!

Hello, When my LO was a baby and I have flown with Emirates, I have always taken the car seat on board with me. I did have a seat next to me booked for the little one on the bassinet row as well as a bassinet, so didn't need the car seat but they just put it in storage on the plane. Emirates are really good, unfortunately my car seat didn't fit the plane seat so was no use. KLM on the other hand were very funny about it and insisted that I had to send the car seat with the buggy. Car seats are not classed as part of your luggage allowance so I personally preferred to take mine with me. Now my LO is older and no longer in the newborn seat, we have a spare one in the UK so no longer carry one with us anymore. My toddler is a light sleeper and any little sound wakes him up, still haven't mastered how to get him back off to sleep. It is almost guaranteed that he will cry for take-off and landing because he has to sit on my lap and prefers not to be restricted No advice on that I am afraid except that don't worry about it, other passengers usually are quite understanding and most of the time feel quite sorry for you. Calpol works a little and I usually tend to opt for night flights so they sleep for some of the time. The bassinet row is a good idea so the LO has room to play on the floor. iPad is a godsend (don't shoot me down on this, but needs must). Favourite books are always good too. Good luck, I too am dreading the plane journey when we go back in the summer now my LO is walking :-/

Have never taken a car seat on a flight, have always hired one with a hired car, or borrowed one from family if we are 'going home'. there are also companies at airports that sometimes just allow to rent a car seat, for the duration of your visit (similar to renting a car), you pick up and drop off at the airport. just google your destination airport/ city and see if you can find something. Bassinet would be waaaay to small for a 21 month old - if you can afford it, I would book an extra seat next you and request it in the bassinet row, if you know what I mean. this gives you more legroom and space for todder to play on the floor, move around etc. At 21 months, you might want to give the little one a biscuit or choccie to chew on during take off and landing to help with keeping ears unblocked. As to getting her to sleep, i found this easier when they were smaller babies! As toddlers, mine tended to stay away for most of the flight, unless the cabin lights were dimmed for everyone else to sleep. DS would only sleep on me, even though he had his own seat. You could ask your GP for a strong antihistamine to help knock the little one out - we used Valergan once or twice for long hauls when kiddies were under 2. very effective : ) Happy travels! ETA you prob only need a second seat in economy. business is big enough for both of you and second seat is a whole other city - great when they're older!! edited by KH on 09/05/2013
