I've just had my first scan at 6 weeks 2 days. The Dr said, based on the size, I am more likely to be 4 weeks pregnant. This doesn't add up based on the date of my last period. The Dr assured me it was fine but to reschedule another scan for three weeks time to check how the baby has grown.

I know I should take the Dr's word but it made me nervous that maybe something is wrong :( Hopefully it's just first time pregnancy paranoia! I'd love to hear from others who had the same experience?

Hi babyrouge, I had my first scan at 6 weeks too, and the doctor said baby's heartbeat was weak for 6 weeks! Of course I had been overdoing with my physical workouts, and was told to take it easy for the next 2 weeks. The baby's healthy at 26 weeks now, growing faster than average rate. So, you have nothing to worry..... just relax, and enjoy.

Novice, week 1 starts with the first day of your period. Even when there's no baby! :) It's the standard practice as it makes assessing the due dates simple :) And congratulations to you too! Thanks :) I'm still in shock about the whole '2 under 2' thing! Not entirely planned! Expected my period about 2 weeks ago and did a pregnancy test when it didn't arrive, which was positive. Although my last couple of cycles were a bit off and I'm not sure about any dates... I'm still surprised to be 8 weeks already.

I have a copy of the scan and it is exactly how the four week scans look on the internet. I was traveling during my LMP, with lots of late nights, time differences etc so DH thinks it may be that all that caused my late ovulation. He's working hard to reassure me everything will be ok :) I'm not as concered today. (although it was the first thought that came to mind when I woke this morning!) There's not much I can do now but wait for the next scan and try be prepared for whatever happens. Kiwispiers - no I don't think so becuase when I questioned her on that, she said "Maybe you weren't ovulating then"? I think she meant I ovulated later than two weeks after LMP, It's very confusing! Thanks again everyone for all the reassurance. xx

I''> got really confused by that too, being 9 weeks pregnant meant I had conceived 7 weeks ago as yes, they do start counting from the first day of last period. Funny enough, my brother and his wife also didn't know this, both doctors no less, had a very awkward moment at their first ultrasound when they were told baby was 9 weeks and my brother had been out of the country until 7 weeks ago. Baby rouge, Is it possible your doctor was breaking convention and not counting this way?

DD2 was about a week and a bit smaller then dates at the start. I was concerned as i miscarried the pregnancy before that. However i sit here typing and looking at my now very healthy (10kg healthy) 7 month old smiling at me. try not to stress i know its hard not to, but honestly scans are just really a guidline at that point. Hugs

don't forget also that any scan is basically down to human interpretation and they measure the baby by eye off a screen... and sometimes bubs is in the process of jiggling about. Scans aren't 100% accurate, even when the baby is near term (how many people have I heard having been told to expect a big baby from the scans and giving birth to a healthy baby 2lb lighter than what the Dr said!)... so when you're 4/6/8 weeks, every millimetre counts! But, you also have to allow for every eventuality. From personal experience, don't set any hopes before 12 weeks. What will happen will happen, regardless of how many scans you may have. Relax, enjoy the fuzzy feeling of being early-days pregnant and don't analyse too much!

Thanks everyone for the positive advice, it's exactly what I need to keep my anxiety at bay :) I called the nurse and asked if there was anything to worry about, why it would be 2weeks behind etc. She was really reassuring and explained that often it's human error, opinion and every case is different. Plus so early it can be hard to get an accurate scan. It did ease my nerves a bit. :) Am just going to try stay positive and be hopeful for my next scan. Congrats to you too ladies :)

Babyrouge, congratulations! I had the same problem and the doctor may be right. Because technically your "conception" could have been anyday in a 2 week window. They couldn't find a heartbeat for me in week 6, so I was asked to come back in 2 weeks and that was the longest fortnight of my life. And remember, you stressing it out will not help the baby in anyway. :) So just relax and trust your body.

I just read (am also newly pregnant so busy dusting off all my pregnancy books) that in the first 12 weeks all babies grow at exactly the same pace and are nearly exactly the same size, so it may be that you didn't ovulate when you thought you did, especially if your period is not regular like clockwork and often out by a week. I'm no expert but would think that either your ovulation date, or the Dr's measurements (human error), are more likely to be the problem at this early stage than the baby's growth.... I can absolutely relate because I just had my first scan yesterday and was shocked to be told that I was more than 8 weeks along which means that the baby must have been conceived straight after my last period???? I thought I was 7 weeks or maybe even 6 weeks :) My last 2 periods were out by about a week and I stupidly did not make a note of the dates (as we were not actually TTC ;)) so I cannot say for sure that the dates are out, but I also have my doubts. Part of me is actually tempted to go to another doctor to see if he/she comes up with the same dates... miss the fantastic doctor I had in Dubai! I suppose the due date can still be corrected when we go for the 12 week scan?????? Or... hmm, am also confused now :) Let us know how it goes.

Thanks srdoucet, thats very reassuring. My periods are usually pretty regular, sometimes they can be a week off, sometimes they are exactly 30 days. I have an appointment for another dr on Sunday so I'll ask them to do a scan and get a second opinion. I don't think I can wait around three weeks! One thing I am going to do is stop googling it, there are too many sad storys which are not helping my anxiety!

you are still early, don't regret anything either. now that you know you need to ask questions you should write them down as they come up for your next visit, i suck at asking questions, so thats what i do i write them down before visiting the pediatrician,,, this may work with the obgyn too : ) good luck : )

Thanks julzandandrew. You are absolutely right. I now regret not asking more questions. I did ask if it indicated a problem and the Dr said not at all. When I asked about the dates not adding up, she explained it may be just down to when I was ovulating. I should have pushed it and asked more questions :( I guess there is not much I can do now but try not to worry and hope everything is ok for the next scan. Fingers and toes are crossed! :)

are your periods regular? My last pregnancy we never thought made sense with the timing of the scans. Ours was close to 3 weeks off from what I figured. I have longer distances between my periods though and basically according to the scans I would have been pregnant right before my next period even though I took a test two days after being late and it was positive. My baby was born 5 weeks early from the scan due date and given his size and what my first was like it was definitely accurate.
