Its a difficult decision for parents and I too went through this worry when mine were born 30 years ago. I also worked as a practice nurse for a while and there was a rush of parents refusing to have their babies vaccinated for various reasons, one being the possibility of brain damage. In my area at this time a baby boy was vaccinated with the whooping cough jab and became unwell a few weeks later. He was admitted to the childrens hospital in Glasgow where he died. Post mortem showed that he had an underlying congenital cerebral problem which had no relation to the vaccine and hadn't been picked up when he was born and would have died before he was 6 months old. Treatment back then wasn't an option. Tragic of course but it sent shock waves around the local population and scores of parents refused to have their children vaccinated because they assumed that this vaccine had been the culprit in spite of TV and newspaper coverage to say otherwise. The result of this was a near epidemic of measles and whooping cough which killed many babies and toddlers and this was only 30 years ago. Sounds a life time ago to young mums today but in the scheme of things it isn't really. It's the most difficult decision a parent will have to make on their child's behalf and it will never be an easy one and never has been. Every parent wants the best for their child.

I will always be skeptical about this. I have heard too many stories and spoken with parents who swear black and blue that their child regressed and showed the first signs of autism around 2 weeks following their MMR jab. Perhaps these parents just need a reason to pin the autism on something, perhaps it is because signs of autism tend to show at 12 months (around the time of the scheduled vax) but I always think that parents know their children best and maybe there is some truth to it. I had some doubts, and as such, waited until DS was 2 years before giving him the MMR Each to their own.

You don't think his study was wrong!!!! He invited kid's to birthday parties and took blood samples without their parents knowing. It's outrageous! You are taking my words out of context. The point I was making was having a study of a segmented group of "healthy" children and studying the affects of a vaccine would only show the affects on healthy children, not ALL children. So the fact that his study included children that had developmental delays to start with shouldn't discredit the fact that it (vaccines) COULD either aggravate, stimulate issues a child already has. It's not only "healthy" children that are given vaccines, we should be worried about the potential affects it could have on all children.

MMR is the only vaccine that is linked to autism & it's only a myth. You can postpone giving them until the age of 2 or 3 if you'r worried. Many of my friends gave it to their LOs at the age 2+.

What I don't understand is that shouldn't the test group have all kinds of children..."healthy" and ones with developmental delays? Surely you can't do a test about the effects on ALL children if you only observe effects on certain "healthy" ones. In that way, I don't think his study was wrong...but to hide the fact that some children did have "issues" at the start seems very fishy indeed! I still stand by it, vaccines MAY have a link with autism and other developmental disorders. At this point, regulatory agencies have pushed the pharmaceutical companies to make them as safe as possible (ie there still is mercury in vaccines, but a much smaller amount now than when they first came out). So for now, I feel confident the benefits outweigh the risks. I hope I am making the right decision.

That's very interesting. GoddessUli. I had read in the Vaccine Book by Dr. Sears though that studies comparable to the Wakefield study were conducted independently came up with the same finding. It's a shame the study was so shoddily done, as now no one seems to know one way or the other. On a side note, it's a shame you don't post anymore. Always enjoyed and appreciated what you had to say.
