Thank you for all your wonderful advice and posts. I have been to Boots today and bought a temperature charting kit, so will start with that and use the ovulation kit too. Luckily, hubby is wonderful about everything and he's making ttc fun and not a chore.
Will also look into the website fertilityfriend.com and have a look for the book recommended also. It's difficult not 'trying' and getting your hopes up, but all this support has made me feel more positive. Thank you ladies. x
There is only a certain period of hours (12 I think ) in which you can actually conceive once you have ovulated. Trick is to have the little swimmers there waiting. Count day 1 as the first day of "full flow"" (sorry for the detail!) and then go for it on day 8,10,12,14 & 16 - twice a day if you can face it!! Have a rest day inbetween to keep $p€rm at optimum quality. Don't rely on the accuracy of ovulation kits etc. If your cycle is not 28 days, you may need to adjust your days accordingly. Fun?...what fun??.....
Drink alcohol and coffee in moderation, or not at all. Eat as much fresh fruit, veg and salad as you can and MOST IMPORTANTLY....lots and lots of luck. xxx

Don't assume that you have a 28 day cycle. Most women do not and charting will help you figure out when you usually ovulate. However, you cannot predict your future cycles based on past cycles because ovulation can be delayed due to sickness, stress, etc. I usually ovulate between days 17-19 though I've ovulated as early as day 15 and as late as day 23! I saw that the book, Taking Charge of Your Fertility, was recommended and I agree! This book is amazing! (I found mine in the Marina Mall Borders Express.)
I'm not trying to get pregnant but I've successfully "charted to avoid" for over a year and will continue to chart when we're TTC. TCOYF will teach you so much about your body and I wish that it was required reading for every woman.
Good luck!! :)
ETA: fertilityfriend.com is a great way to track temps, CM, etc online. They also have a free course you can take.

good advice everyone - the only thing I think abour charting is that if you are trying to put it all to the back of your mind, it is very difficult when having to chart every day. As it is the first thing you have to do every morning (after you turn off that ****** alarm clock :) it is the first thing of the day that you think about....if you have been ttc for some time, and its yet another month that it hasnt worked when you see that temperature dip, then it can be quite demoralising.... if you know what i mean.
I COMPLETELY understand and appreciate the advantages of it but if you are ttc for some time then it can be a little depressing :(
couldnt agree more. there is a post on here somewhere of me hitting rock bottom with another temp dip. BUT i learnt so much about my body with charting & what goes along with it. i understood certain changes and CM for the first time in my life. i just picked myself up, dusted myself off and continued charting ... the positives outweigh the negatives IMO.
dubaicat, yes that's me :D thanks, thought we'd never get there!
speak to plumie, she's got the lowdown of what's been happening. we're actually meeting this weekend ;)

have you tried charting your temperature? they sell the kits at boots and i swear by it. we've been trying for years, no success. i researched, read till i thought i could no more and then started charting. three consecutive times i fell pregnant within 2 months of charting (all 3 pregnancies ended in miscarriage :( ). we tried again at the beginning of this year, charted again, and i'm 28 weeks pregnant today. :)
there is a lot to read about it on this forum, and one very wise poster, dubaicat, can fill any gaps you may have. she's been extremely helpful on this topic.
good luck and lots of babydust to you both x
I'm blushing :D.
I was just about to post this when I read ilovewine's post. Great advice. If you've had a check-up and ruled out problems, I honestly believe this gives you the best possible chance of conception. Like ilw, we 'tried' for a long time. Happily I had no miscarriages that I'm aware of but we stopped using contraception four years before we finally hit jackpot and this came after I did a shedload of research into charting and seriously knuckled down to it.
Yes, you have to wake up at the same time every day (give or take a hung-over weekend day) and yes, you have to remember to do it but I felt it was worth its weight in gold so it was worth it for me.
FertilityFriend is a great website and the book Taking Charge of Your Fertility is an invaluable resource. I have yet to retrieve my copy from lending it out on EW but that's reminded me to chase it up!
Do post if you have any questions and I'm sure we'll all do our best to help. And good luck :D.
PS I hated the 'just do it ever other day all month' advice. Like I could be bothered to do that! I like my sleep! ;).
PPS ilovewine, did you have another username before this one? If so and it's what I think it is I am SO pleased for you! xx

we tried to get pregnant for 2 and a half years... the first 2 years didn't even know anything was wrong... then i was diagnosed with pcos... did multiple rounds of clomid which didn't work then was finally able to conceive on famara... you can do the ovulation test, track your temp etc... as far as foods, there are certain diets associated with whether or not the sperm will have a better chance of living inside of you.. you can look up alkaline diets (associated with conceiving)... certain foods that are more acidic will kill off sperm (be careful though because the foods you think are acidic sometimes aren't and visa verse) also if you orgasm during intercourse it makes less of an ideal environment for the sperm... also to increase sperm count your husband shouldn't do certain things... like smoke, take hot baths etc... i don't remember all the details of this as it has been a while since i researched it... but if you just start googling stuff and reading you will find all the info.... that being said people conceive everyday without doing any of this... so there is no guarantee just a few ideas :) one other thing... don't have intercourse everyday... the doctor told us to do it every other day... reason being you want the sperm to build back up, and the sperm can live inside of you i think for up to 3 days, so even if you don't have intercourse on the exact day you ovulate the sperm should still be able to fertilize (also fyi... I'm pregnant now, with my second and when we conceived i was using an ovulation kit which never indicated i was ovulating... so i wouldn't base it on that... i would just have *** every other day) if nothing works i would maybe get a second opinion from a doc... or ask your doc about taking clomid. good luck.
I should start the charting too, heard if it, but i usually jump up from bed and off to work by the time i remeber about the chart its usually 12 pm :(

by the way, i used this website to enter my temps electronically. you can enter a lot of other details too, which is helpful in establishing ovulation etc

(and, we're the same age as you)
My friend's doctor gave her these tips to follow: 1st - you should get together "you know what I mean" one day after the other, 2nd- just forget about the idea, if kids are on your minds, you will be stressing yourself out "both of you" just forget and enjoy! your mood is really important for the process!. A lot of other tips, but mostly when I think of them, they all talk about relax she should be, happy and trust that this will happen eventually, but it wil only take the time it needs.
Good luck ladies, "try preservatives... and oops there the baby!!! ;) LOL "

Hi ladies,
Hubby and I have been trying, albeit unsuccessful to get pregnant over the past year. However, he has been away a lot so that obviously doesn't help! Anyway, he is on secondment in Dubai for the next 6 months...yay! Needless to say, we are going for it now.
Have both been checked and all appears ok. I have ovulation kits. But I wanted to ask if you have any tips, old wives tales, things to eat, not eat, drink, etc. You get the idea. Basically, what should we be doing to get that bun in the oven. :D
Oh, by the way, I am 38 and he is 39. X
