We followed DD's lead regarding potty training - she refused to wear a nappy, was dry the whole morning at nursery asking to go pee with the other kids etc. I knew it would be a bumpy road and she's been doing sooo well... but just when i think we've got the jist of it theres a series of accidents back to back. The biggest problem we're having, hence my post, is that she'll say (with a smile on her face) "Mummy i'm doing pee!" so i just up and say "ok quick lets go!".. then she laughs saying no no that she doesnt need to go. She'll do this a few times and its virtually impossible to get her on the loo. I want to encourage her to tell me and she does sometimes but at the moment its a bit of the boy who cried wolf. Any tips?

we did rewards but DD can be difficult with these things sometimes - she loves stickers and always seems proud of her drawings i've stuck on the wall. so we sat down and made a sticker chart one day. As soon as it was done and i put it on the wall she wanted to tear it down, she stopped wanting the stickers etc. i guess its just patience and perseverance!

DD hated me nagging her and treats/rewards only worked for about a week at a time. The best/worst incentive fail we encountered was an apparently failsafe "one sweetie if you do wee/poo on the loo, and if it's in your knickers, mummy gets the sweetie"... cue DD proudly announcing that I could have a sweet! Anyhow, she also went through a phase of "helpful" informing. I did several things - 1 was to lay it on thick as to where wee/poo belongs (in the loo), another was to constantly (when she was on the loo) reinforce that grown-ups/ big girls/ mummy & daddy did ALL their wees/ poos in the loo and lastly, made getting tot he loo a bit of a game... well, sort of. She'd shout "NEED A WEE WEEEEE!" and I'd drop everything I was doing and shout back "quick quick quick run to the loo quick quick! and we'd both scuttle off as fast as we could. Honestly, 8 long months and every trick in the book... if only there were medals!

Rewards worked best with my LO's - notably lollies or chocolate! :) Everytime they went they got a treat from the fridge - I only needed to carry this on for about 2 weeks until they were well sorted with the potty training and then we stopped.

i try to take her every 45mins but sometimes she'll fight big time and other time she'll tell me "its not working" and jump off the loo, despite my efforts with toys, stickers, sitting on the floor reading her books... only to wet herself 5 minutes later :s Thanks for the tip...might give it a go!

Hi potty training can be such a nightmare! have you tried reminding her every 30 min or so to go to the toilet before waiting till its too late? One thing I did do with my son was I took him to a toy store and explained we were buying a special toy for the toilet, I let him choose what ever toy he liked(within reason) when we got home I let him play with it for about20 min or so, then explained that he could only have the special toy when he was on the toilet. So everytime I prompted him to go to the toilet, he had his special toy to play with, when he was done on the toilet, the toy and put away somewhere safe till he needed to go again. This may or may not help, but you just need to keep your cool(easier said then done) and carry on. She will eventually go when she needs to. Don't give up and good luck...
