DD turned 12 a month ago. I became a SAHM two weeks ago (almost). I dont know what is going on, but she is constantly crying and whining. She makes a fuss at meal times (she used to be a champion eater), she cries and cries and cries till I take her, she screams in her car seat and now her pram! I am losing it. I cant discipline her, she wont understand. I try and praise good behavior. Today has been worse than usual!

Is this a phase? Am I doing something wrong? Gaaaaah

The problem is that I am getting embarassed to take her out! She was a holy terror at Dubai Mall yesterday as she was screaming her head off in her pram and both my maid and I have bad backs! Carrying her 9kg body around nearly put us on bed rest. I was meeting an old friend for a cup of coffee and DD was so cranky and fidgety! Argh. I thank God my maid decided to come with us for an outing and helped out. I usually dont take her everywhere with me. edited by kcinthecity on 17/03/2011

My LO was doing exactly what you described KC yesterday. I was wondering..where has my lil sunshine gone? I think my LO is going through seperation anxiety. I work part time and my mum says she is an angel while I am at work. When I am home, she doesn't let go of me for a sec.

Mine is exactly the same. I read last night that they slow down eating after 12 months so don't worry too much about that. And, also read, that they go through a whole phase of seperation anxiety, so the change in her routine could be the cause of the anxiety.

Well, u've just changed her routine havent u? She was used to saying bye to you in the morning and now ur there all the time. As happy as she is, maybe she is insecure that u might go away again? Or it could be just the teeth! Dont worry... kids go thru phases.. mine stops eating once in a while and then eats like he hasnt seen food before.. all part of the plan :)

Ashc: i dont know if its teething. God I hope it is. The thing is she stops screaming when I pick her up so I think its a little more than the teething thing. Observe on Monday! ha ha. I am trying to praise her for good behavior but there isnt much to praise these days! Lol.

Ok, I agree with everyone, but also, are you SURE its not teething? That could explain the not eating and clinginess could be coz she's feeling poorly?? Its a hard phase! <hugs>

second what HAK said....it's pretty much overnight that they turn from cuddly cooing happy little darlings to these willful screaming toddlers...... it's the best/worst kept secret - the terrible 2's dont start at 2 and they pretty much last till 4...... she is finding her own personality and expressing her likes and dislikes in terms of exerting some control over her life. You have to decide what is non- negotiable ( eg hygiene, safety etc) and then go with the flow on the rest....no point in battling every single little thing- more so as you will go crazy do a search on all the tantrum threads.....DS1 had the same thing happen around 13 months...it was such a shock but unfortunatly was already pregnant with DS2 then..

she's happy to see you?! lol As for discipline, she does understand more than you possibly think. OK, she will only understand the immediate "this makes me happy/ unhappy/ angry" and basic commands, so stick with them when appropriate. Mean what you say and continue praising good behaviour. If my daughter's anything to go by, this "phase" lasts until they're about 3.5 years old! lol

Just kidding :) they go through these phases, it will pass in a day or two. Think of it like this, she is practicing for when she is older and has PMS and then has a real reason to cry, scream and have a melt down. ;)
