Am finding so hard to deal with conflicting advice when trying to do the best for DS...One of the Paeds at Emirates hospital, 30 years experience, told me to avoid giving LO red meat (and eggs too) before 12 months as its hard to digest..he is 10 months old and im more concerned about the negative effect of a low iron level as its needed for physical and mental development. Any thoughts? If not red meat then which foods are a good alternative source of iron.

I agree with you, MM - it's simply not on when people in positions to know better try to pass off their own opinions as law. My health visitor said to start meat from 6-8 months. She recommended lamb as being a "super-meat" because it's quite fatty and so gives loads of calories, which is exactly what they need. Make sure that eggs are well-cooked though - including the yolk.

Sounds like this is more of a personal opinion of your Paed than something which health guidlines suggest. I know that there are some schools of thought that nobody should eat red meat as your body is unable to completely break it down and maybe this is where he is coming from? I did the same as the other posters and introduced meat gradually from around 6 months. If this advice has gone against your own instincts then either go with them or get a 2nd opinion.

Under current recommendations of introducing complementary foods around 6 months when a baby shows signs of readiness, meat is actually recommended as an early food because of the iron issue. If allergies are a concern, lamb and turkey can be introduced before chicken and beef...but again, allergies are less of a problem if baby was developmentally ready before solids were introduced. Red meat was recommended to me as a weaning food by my son's pediatrician (who was also an infant feeding specialist). If you're concerned, other sources of iron include oily fish, fortified cereals, lentils, dried fruits (e.g. apricots and prunes), and dark leafy greens. edited by BFC on 03/01/2011

I've never heard that! DD has had eggs and red meat from 6m and she is absolutely fine! Alternative sources would be beans and lentils but again some say that they are to be avoided until 18m!!! Spinach and green leafy vegetables are good sources of iron ... We are doing BLW and DD's food choices are so interesting - some days its all about meat and today she ate almost a whole head of broccoli!

I've not heard of that, waiting until they are 1. All of the books talk about introducing meat from 7/8 months onward. If you do want to avoid meat but are worried about iron, I would suggest lentils or tofu. ETA Mine is 7 months and has been eating meat for a month now. He loves it. edited by granola on 02/01/2011
