Hey ladies,

I would really appreciate some tips please.

A week ago i started to potty train my little girl, at first it was going great, she loved sitting on the potty, i really thought she would learn in no time.

However, for the past two days, when i have tried to put her on the potty she fights and screams to get off, she also holds her poo in. At first i assumed I was late as she had already let some poo out in her nappy but then within minutes of me changing her and putting her down, she will let the rest out.

I know potty training is not easy, i dnt expect it to be either, but i don't understand why the potty seems to have turned into a scary place for her now.

Has anyone had any experiences of this?

TIA x

I suspect you will really struggle to toilet train her at 13 months. Yes, it would make life easier, but I suspect you'll end up with more accidents than not. My daughter is 16 months and I don't think she's anywhere near ready. I want to train her sooner than we did with my son (@2.5 and still working on nights now at nearly 3.5), but know that she's not verbal enough and doesn't understand things well enough yet. I have a friend back home with a newborn and a 3.5 year old. She's just toilet training the son now while on maternity leave for work. I suspect she's running herself ragged trying to manage both, but it is what it is. You'll survive managing them both. Good luck!

Thank you so much for ur advice ladies, I've been using pull ups too but I think shes just too little to understand. She's 13 months and i want to get her trained before baby number two arrives. However i think I may have to wait until she understands words a little more, until then i will be telling her exactly what it is she is doing, taking her to the toilet when I go and even putting her on the potty even if her nappy is on so she understands the concept of sitting down.

My DS has only done number twos when waking up from naps in his nappy since he was around 8months old. Toilet training went really well as far as wees were concerned, and we put him straight in pants, except when he went to bed. I was starting to think he would never use the toilet for poohs and just gave up, and though he will when he's ready. Well tonight was the night. He asked for his potty before he fell asleep. I just thought he was avoiding going to bed. But he did both in the dark and was apologising for the smell. Obviously something had put that in his mind a long time ago. We made a huge fuss, he got a present and we sat and read his potty book and chatted about how everyone goes to the toilet, it never smells great but its better out than in. Now he's saying he's excited to go again tomorrow. your little lady will sort it out in her own time. All children are different. Follow your gut and you'll be fine :) PS. Did I mention how excited I am that he pooped!!!!!! :D Isn't it amazing how your life changes ;)

We potty trained with pull ups, we didn't go with bare bum as it might cause confusion. It was stress free for both of us. We used to take him to the toilet every 1 hr, he was dry after 1 month with no accidents when we ditched the pull ups

We did pants off potty training, also I took things slowly so initially we just did wees and if my son wanted to do poos and asked for a nappy I let him have one, and took it off again after he had done it, I figure learning recognise and to communicate his need to go is part of the process. Once we were sorted for number ones we took on number twos. Initially I left his nappy on when we were out and about but it was just too confusing for him, he kept asking if he was wearing a nappy before he wee'd so after a week or two we stopped that too.

Make it a fun, happy place. I know many are against it, but we did treats and stickers for potty training and it really helped with the motivation. You mentioned a nappy, though, and I think if you're trying to potty train her you really need to take the nappy's away except maybe for naps and night if you're not ready to do those yet. Putting her back in a nappy during the day means she can just wait and go in the nappy without any consequences. We trained my DS "bare bum" for the first few days. We danced and celebrated any time he got anything in the potty. He had to help clean up any accident. The training potty stayed in whatever room he was in at the time so I could catch him any time he started to pee or poop and put him on the potty. Took a week or so to get him to initiate trips to the potty before he started to go.
