Many congratulations to Farasha. I hope her little chaps go from strength to strength. My daughter was in NICU 2 months (not a twin) and I breastfed her after 6 weeks. She had no problems and is still BFing at 10 months old - while feeding issues are more common in prems or babies who have been in NICU if you encourage them many have no problems with it at all. And my experience was with her being bottle fed in NICU towards the end - she is now a very flexible feeder who will take a bottle or BF. My LO was fed with TPN (Total Parental Nutrition) whilst on a ventilator -it is fed directly into the vein so bypasses the digestive system - possibly because of breathing problems or because they don't want to burden the digestive system if they are addressing something else. My daughter had a PDA (heart valve issue) and consequent murmur - while treating this they could not feed her my colostrum but did as soon as poss. I can't imagine that they wld withold colostrum without good reason - but Farasha should certainly ask and feel reassured it will be given as soon as. They should be communicating fully with her about this. In NICU the nurses referred to the colostrum as liquid gold, so am sure that they will feel it is similarly important for this little man. She could also ask about cup feeding for later to support BFing - something I read about later but never experienced with NICU in Dubai - they do seem more bottle orientated here. Hope this helps a bit - again to reassure - BFinf is def more than possible! All the very best to Farasha and her little boys.

I didn't have twins nor was my LO in NICU but a good friend of mine from back home, delivered her daughter at 31weeks. She was in the NICU until she was 3 months old and my friend- with a lot of persistence and patience was able to BF. She was pumping regularly to keep her supply up (I don't Farahsha would have a supply problem, if one of the twins is feeding). But I too would also question why they would not feed baby with the expressed milk?

My twin was in NICU for 2.5 months and wouldnt bf till recently. But I had to keep trying once she was home to make sure she tried. Her sister was not allowed to be bfed till almost a month but she also didnt have any issues. Both are bf now. Best of luck to Farsha and her babies...

Congratulations to Farasha on the birth of her twins! I have twin boys and although they weren't in NICU I would tell her not to worry at all about the bonding between them - plenty of time for that. I don't understand why the hospital hasn't given him any colostrum yet? What are they giving him? There is nothing better than colostrum and I would certainly demand it. I know lots of multiples mums who have had babies in the NICU and successfully breastfed when they have come out - definitely get support from a LC or health visitor to start off in the best way with latch and positioning. She might want to checkout the local twins club website for info and the facebook page for advice. www.multiplieduae.com Good luck x

Hi again I know a mama of twin girls, one of whom was in the NICU for a while after birth. She breastfed her babies for 16 mos, and would be happy to be in touch w Farasha if she'd like to hear from someone who's been there. Drop me a line if you'd like me to put them in touch. Khoury at null dot net. xx

Does the hospital have a lactation consultant on staff? If so, then she is entitled to push for information and support, and I would encourage her to do so. It is indeed easier by far to breastfeed when mum and baby have the opportunity to breastfeed from birth but absolutely it is *not* a write-off is this is unable to happen. It may be that baby takes to the breast as soon as he is able to, but it is also possible that they may need a bit of help and I very much hope that she is able to get help if this should happen to ensure that she and both her sons have the breastfeeding relationship she wants. Is she in the UAE? If there is no LC and if Farasha is open to it, you might like to suggest that she contact one of the sources of help in the Breastfeeding Support in the UAE thread. They will be able to offer moral support and reassurance (which I'm sure she is also getting from you and hopefully also from the hospital - I know that you are a great support and mine of information to her), and also information on preparing for a successful breastfeeding relationship with the little boy who hasn't nursed yet - or perhaps just having the list of possible sources of help in case things don't go well at first may be reassuring for her. The very best of luck to her! xx

Mine started to bf when she was 3 months old! I was pumping and feeding till then. Tell her to relax about it but ask why they have not given any colostrum yet... they wanted to feed mine some the very next day.

I'm not a twin mummy but please reassure her that it will all be ok. I didn't get to bf J for about 2 weeks or so. He had no problems with his latch when we started. As for bonding - they have had plenty of time inutero and this small time they are apart will be nothing in their long, long life together. They will have plenty of time to bond when they get home :) Tell Farasha to relax, enjoy and think happy thoughts :)

farasha is in the hospital with her babies. She is doing well and has one of her boys with her. The other little boy is in the NICU with some breathing problems. She is pumping for the baby in NICU but they haven't given him any of colostrum yet. Farasha is concerned that she may not be able to breastfeed him becauthese he's not been breastfed from birth. Also, she is concerned about the bonding between the boys because they've been apart since birth. Any words of wisdom? Pls keep the little on who is in NICU in your thoughts and prayers. (sorry for typos - on my phone)
