I don't want to give my one year old cows milk and would prefer goats milk but i cannot find any fresh, apparently spinneys sell it but they had sold out when i went. I can find UHT goats milk but is that any good? Im a bit reluctant to give UHT as not sure if it is the same quality. Does anyone do this?

oh and one more thing, I know I said UHT milk can contain e numbers, but it doesnt always. I know in NZ its just milk, but here most brands have stabiliser etc added as well as vit D (and often vit A). So the goat milk you have been looking at might be 100% milk, you'll need to check the box.

*disclaimer, this is not something I have heavily looked into, but on the surface, it certainly doesn't look to me that goats or camels is "closer" to human.* I suspect that sellers of said milks are pushing that idea, but not sure that it is actually true. Not to suggest those milks are bad, just that maybe there is a bit too much hype?? edited by kiwispiers on 07/05/2013

You know, I hear a lot of people saying that goats and camel milks are closer to human, but all the research I've done sort of suggests the opposite. For example one of the reasons for not giving cows milk before 12 months, is that it is higher in protein and sodium than human milk (which is hard for a young baby to process/taxing on their liver) the nutrient breakdown below actually shows that goat milk has [b'>even higher[/b'> levels of protein and sodium than cows milk and from memory, the same is true of camel milk. I have also read that also read that although some people who react to the type of casein on cows milk, can tolerate the type in goats, most people who ract to one react to the other (and some tolerate cows but not goats) and neither is particuarly similar to human.I don't know whether cows are given laction hormones in the UAE or in the UK, I know this is a problem in milk produced in the states but actually not something "routinely done" worldwide. The biggest source of hormones in milk is actually those produced naturally by the cow (as they are in a constant state of lactation) and that would be true of goat milk or camel milk too. The UHT process does breakdown the casein (and change it slightly) I have seen some research to say this makes it easier for humans to digest and some to say the opposite, so which to believe??. Anyway, just some food (or milk) for thought, I would personally buy fresh organic cows milk than UHT goats and if I was giving goats or camels to a toddler, I would be mindful of the higher levels of sodium and possibly adjust their diet accordingly. (depending on how much they are drinking). Breastfeeding: Human Milk Versus Animal Milk Milk from cows and goats is quite different in composition than human breast milk and, therefore, should not be fed to human infants. Human milk, which is designed specifically for promoting infant health, is much lower in protein, calcium, and sodium, and higher in mono- and polyunsaturated fats, carbohydrates, folate, and vitamin C. Hi Evelyn I don't drink cows milk myself for various reasons including hormones and how difficult it is to digest. So I didn't really want to give it to my baby, goats milk is easier to digest and closer to human milk but obviously the UHT part concerns me. I would consider Camels milk but I fly home at times and I wouldn't think its that accessible in the UK!

nutritionally it is similar, UHT milk though quite often has other things added, stabilisers etc (aka e numbers ;) ) which to me is a reason to avoid it. any paeticular reason you would prefer goats to cows?
