My son has always been a pretty good sleeper. He has been sleeping 7pm -5-630am.
Recently he has been waking at 3 am. If i leave him to cry in the cot (after checking him) he will cry and cry until i go to him. If i put him in bed with me he stops! He doesn't need a nappy change and doesn't have night feeds (he dropped them at 10week old and is now 8m old)
He does have two fangs coming through though, could this be the problem??? It doesn't seem to be a pain cry though and when his bottom 2 teeth came in they didn't affect sleep at all.
Thanks for any advice.

Daddy might have to sleep on the couch a bit ;) DC2DXB dropping naps varies a bit but mine shifted to 2 naps at around 9 months, which was later than my friends. He started really taking a long time to settle for the third nap and sleeping worse at night so it was quite obvious for us. Best to introduce solids starting with a little fruit puree in the morning, so you can see if he has any reactions to the food (even though you obviously want him to sleep longer at night don't be tempted to try and fill him up too much with anything other than milk at this stage, you risk him getting constipated and gassy). Better to up the milk intake and consider a dream feed. ah! we dropped the df about a month ago bc it was waking her up! i upped all her bottles now and will start with solids next week. she did sleep a little better last night. even when she does wake - there are no tears or anything, and she settles back quickly. i guess this is what they mean when they say, "every day something new". :)

L85 you think him and M are having shots about with the sleeping nonsense? If it's not one it's the other having a bad night and if it's not me being a zombie it's you. If this is the case then don't worry M will snap back to his usual ways soon, after all he has had 3 good nights. On a serious note though it does sound like he just wants reasurance, like M. It is just not like him at all to have a good old cry. I have my fingers crossed it passes quickly! I sure do think him and M may have had words sometime last week, that's why M was so happy with him yesterday maybe?? I'm so glad M is sleeping better for you i am but can he not find another baby to pass it too :) Last night was stupid. After settling him in his cot finally he decided he would only sleep 3 hours and then wake every 10 minutes after that!!! I kept getting out and putting the mobile on and walking away and then he settled for all of 5 minutes! In the end he was in bed with us and he is such a fidget ass!!!!! I know Daddy will complain once he gets up from his sleepin!!!!!!!!!!!

Same happened to my son when he was about 8 months and it lasted almost a week. I was all alone so no hubby to help out so I understand completely how hard it can be. As I was staying at my parents place and I didnt want to wake them I just took him into my bed. Few weeks later he had 6 teeth. He normally sleeps from 7 till 7 but every once in a while, maybe once or twice a month he has a 3am episode and than I take him into my bed until he falls asleep very deeply and than carry him back to his cot. I wish I cold climb into his cot and sleep with him, I am a giant..very cute Laura It's nice for a quick cuddle but very uncomfy. Maybe it is the teeth. Not convinced though as the others didn't cause it BUT it started as the fang cut! Who knows??

same with us. i can wake with a pin drop - he'd sleep through an earthquake. so... we sleep the other direction when i bring her to bed. eg, she's between me and the headboard (i guess it depends on what kind of bed you have) and he sleeps on the other side. also depends on your bed size i suppose! you fit in his cot?! yeah, i'd definitely bring us both crashing to the floor! Haha, you probably wouldn't - quite sturdy these cots :) Both him and I are small though. That still wouldn't work as, My husband is 6ft4 so sleeing across is a no go edited by laurab85 on 25/08/2011

I would co-sleep but i can't as my husband is a very heavy sleeper and would be too scared. Tonight he cried and cried - eventually [i'>[b'>i caved and climbed in his cot with him[/b'>[/i'> (good job i'm small) he shut up instantly climbed onto me, laid on my chest and cuddled me and went to sleep - sooooo cute but can't do this everynight!!! Awwww....cute! :)

thx kiwispiers! i was actually going to bring in solids next week since i'll be home all week from work and can monitor how she does. hopefully it improves if it is in fact hunger. and funny you say that, just this week i realized she's been draining her bottles (finally!) so we upped them yesterday and today. fingers crossed..... when do you drop the third nap??? she will tell you or rather she won't be sleepy til bedtime..

5.5 months is early to drop the nap, probably not ready, yours is more likely sleep regression ;) (or actually hungry)

laura this could be my post! DD is 5.5 months and since about 3 months has been great at 7-5/6:30 (and once 6:45, blisssssssssss). To be honest, anything before 6:30 is too early for me and ive just brought her to my bed. im ok with that, not ideal - but it works for us. But all of sudden there is a 1am wake up. She's on 3naps a day still and doesnt seem to be cutting any teeth (although teething since about 4months). She also doesnt have anymore night feeds. Should I be dropping her 3rd nap? I feel like she will be WIRED if i push her until 7pm......

Thanks for your advice everyone. He is having 2-3 naps a day (3 when he is getting me up earlier) I didn't think it was the teeth. I forgot to add this to the origianl post - He AWAYS used to go into his cot for his naps and straight in there at night after his bottle with no problem....now he cries and cries - he has been crying for the last 20 minutes now!!

TwoKids it is normal, mine did too.... :) L85, since this is a new thing though, although not settling back might be emotional, I wanted to add in regards to why he might be waking in the first place, is he still on 3 sleeps, it might be time to try dropping the third nap?

I thought that this was normal! :) My 8 mo DS has woken every night at 4-5am for a feed (BF). Might be time to review my strategies! My DS also has the two bottom teeth (no dramas) but he is quite troubled at the moment by the 3rd bottom tooth coming through.

Sounds like it is an emotional need rather than a physical one. At this age it is really up to you how to respond/meet his need, you have tried the two extremes (co-sleeping and leaving him to cry) so I guess if you're not keen on the co-sleeping then work backwards from one end or the other, (sitting with him in the room while he goes back to sleep) until you find a middle ground that works for you. PS the teething is probably making him slightly uncomfortable and a mummy cuddle is just enough to take his mind off it, but probably not the cause if the waking is always at the same time.
