Is there a good, non-SIDS risk toy that anyone recommends for babies as soon as they can start using one? Like something that they find comforting when they sleep or just to play with themselves when mommy's in the bath n stuff like that? And at what age can we start giving babies these toys?

My son is 11 weeks and things that he has liked so far are: Musical toys over his crib. Got one from Mamas & Papas that has little bears that dangle down. After a nappy change he lies in his cot and now starts to hit the little bears as they go round. A Tomy musical box which directs light with shapes etc on to the ceiling. This is voice activated so you can leave it on all night and it will just play when he cries. His favourite is his rocker from M&P which has a canopy with stars. In recent weeks I have dangled bright soft toys from it to catch his attention. I would worry that he is too young to have a comforter with him whilst he naps. For now I would just suggest trying to stimulate him/her with bright colours or black/white like someone suggests. How old is your LO?

Thanks Giggles. Yup a play gym is def on my list to buy... but I was talking about a soft toy that maybe the baby will be emotionally attached to? Like how some kids have a favorite blankie? baby won't be attached to anything in the initial few weeks. Then it usually starts with something they like to chew on, and the emotional attachment comes quite late! When the baby is born, he won't be able to differentiate b/w colours, except stark differences like black and white and all the images are usually blurry too. I had some flash cards with different black and white patterns that i used to show to DS, which he used to just stare. Along with that the rattle which he used to stare too and later starting to turn to the sound of it. Then toys of different textures, shapes should be introduced once the grasp starts developing. Basically look for toys that stimulates the baby, like her vision, hearing, touch. HTH

I figured that was what you were looking for. My DD quickly became obsessed with the toys that hung from the play gym so I'd take one off for her to play with when I noticed her interest. I also got a great little Organic cotton bear from The Toy Store that is small and doesn't have any buttons or bits that could fall off. She wasn't overly keen on it originally but she now sleeps with it every night! I would steer clear of anything blankie-like until they can roll or at least have the co-ordination/strength to get it away from their face if necessary. Good luck with your search. Sorry I wasn't much help. edited by Giggles on 26/01/2011 Ooooh, organic cotton bear! Sounds like I could do with one now :D Thanks, I will take alook at it this weekend
