The new royal baby’s name was officially registered on his birth certificate yesterday, after it was announced last week that the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge named her third child Louis Arthur Charles.
After the world waited in anticipation for four days for the new royal title to be revealed, we wanted to explore the meaning behind Prince Louis’ name, alongside the names of his siblings Prince George and Princess Charlotte –with Louis was a surprise choice considering it was already one of Prince George's middle names.
It appears that the name Louis, which is French in origin and holds a strong meaning of “Famous in Battle,” also has many royal links and is already a popular choice with the royal family, as a middle name of Prince William, as well as George.
Royal baby names are often traditional and family-inspired, as here is the meaning and the sentiment behind the names of George, Charlotte and their new baby brother Louis…
His Royal Highness Prince Louis Arthur Charles of Cambridge
Prince Louis is the youngest child of Prince William and Kate Middleton and his official title is His Royal Highness Prince Louis Arthur Charles of Cambridge. We’ll start with the new royal baby’s first name, Louis, which is a middle name of both his father William and older brother George. Prince William's great-great-grandfather was Prince Louis of Battenberg and Louis was also the name of Prince Philip's beloved uncle Lord Mountbatten.
Prince Louis’ middle name Arthur is also a middle name of his father William and has a royal theme following the legendary King Arthur. The middle name Charles is a tribute to the Duke of Cambridge’s father, the Prince of Wales, Prince Louis’ grandfather.
His Royal Highness Prince George Alexander Louis of Cambridge
Prince George is the eldest child of Prince William, Duke of Cambridge, and Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge, and third in the line of succession to the British throne. Expected to become King one day, George will be the nation’s seventh King George, after Queen Elizabeth’s father was King George VI. Whilst, his father King George V, founded the House of Windsor in 1917, which makes it a strong name for a ruling royal.
George’s middle name, Alexander, pays tribute to the Queen, whose full name is Elizabeth Alexandra Mary. George's third name, Louis, is the same middle name as Prince William and his new baby brother.
Her Royal Highness Princess Charlotte Elizabeth Diana of Cambridge
Princess Charlotte is the middle child of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, and their only daughter. The Princess of the United Kingdom recently made history when she kept her position as fourth in the line to the throne, despite having a younger brother who traditionally would have overtaken her.
Charlotte’s middle name Elizabeth was in honour of her great-grandmother the Queen, as it is also the middle name of her mother Catherine. The name Diana pays tribute to her late grandmother Princess Diana. Charlotte’s first name was thought to be a feminine version of Charles, in honour of her grandfather. As the name also has historic royal links with a previous Queen Charlotte and Princess Charlottes.
