He may have hosted The Generation Game, but for the ever-controversial Jim Davidson, speaking on ITV breakfast show Good Morning Britain, nappy-changing is where he draws the line.

“There’s all stuff in there,” he informed a bemused Susanna Reid, “I’ll change one if they haven’t gone”.

“Brilliant,” quipped GMB presenter, Susanna Reid, “you’re a dad who’ll only change a clean nappy.”

With five marriages and five children under his belt, Davidson has had plenty of opportunity to practise parental procedure, and has determined that nappy-changing simply is not for him.

“I used to get an au pair girl or a nanny to do it,” continued Davidson, “do you clean your own windows?”

Even Piers Morgan was taken aback: “You do it to yourself,” he asked, “so why won’t you do it for your lovely little baby?”

Needless to say, the Twitterati were unimpressed. Several stay-at-home-dads expressed their derision underneath the video, calling Davidson “a man who can’t swallow his ego for his kids”.

“It’s 2019,” said one user, simply, “men should change nappies.”

Not all were surprised though, and a number of long-term Jim-watchers chimed in to say that, love or loathe it, it was exactly the view they would expect from the veteran comic. “Next week,” quipped one sarcastic tweeter, “what religion is the Pope?”

A few leapt to Davidson’s defence – arguing that each family do things differently. “What suits one household wont suit another,” said one, “as long as it works in that particular house it’s no one else`s business.”

“Jim is from a different generation,” conceded fellow guest, broadcaster and male nappy-changer Jamie East. “His views are probably wide apart from many others.”

“My views are for grown-ups,” Davidson retorted.

His remarks come hot off the heels of similar comments by Russell Brand, when discussing his own philosophy for 21st century parenting in an interview with Sunday Times Magazine . Speaking about his two young daughters, he said: “[My wife Laura] wouldn’t go away for 24 hours, she respects and cares for their safety too much. I’m very, very focused on the mystical connotations of their beauty and grace – not so good on the nappies and making sure that they eat food.”

“When I looked after Mabel on her own”, he continued, “she dropped two social classes in an hour. In no time at all we’re in a coffee shop, she’s just got a nappy on and she’s covered in stuff because I’m not willing to fight any of the battles.”

If the Twittersphere was irked by one celebrity parent with an aversion to dirty nappies, two was almost more than some could bear.

However, for all the furore, most Twitter users stayed true to form and prioritised taking the Mickey…
