Hello,
My husband recently got a job in Abu Dhabi and we are joining him in July 2012.
We have three children, two boys aged 15 and 13 and daughter aged 11. Our daughter has Autism and is attending a Special Needs school.
I would like to register my children in the british schools for the upcoming 2012/2013 Academic year. Could you please provide me with information on which schools and how to do this now before coming over? For other parents with children with Autism, what are you doing for your kids in terms of schools and therapies?
Thank you for all your help.
Kind Regards
Yvonne
Ps* any tips on accomodation will also come in handy as well - just seen loads of post on school/catchment area.

Are you looking for a 4bed + Maids room apartment? I have one to rent in Al Muneera (Aldar) which is a very nice development with nice views. You are welcome to go have a look, just let me know. I can email you all the info you need. Im a British expat, for your information.

Within your budget you will also manage to get a 4 or 5 bedroomed villa in Al Reef (5 beds come with there own pool). lovely community which is developed with a shop, pools, gyms, bus route etc - just slightly further out of the city, Only 45 mins to Dubai and 20 minutes to Abu Dhabi city / corniche. I work near BSAK and it takes approx 25 mins to get there in the morning. 15 minutes to Al Yasmina. Good luck with the school hunting edited by Pootle Flump on 04/03/2012

Hi, Thxs for yr advice. I've passed info to hubby. He has started looking at some places and depending on what we see cld add a bit more on the rent taking all factors (ease of traffic, etc ) into consideration. Cheers. you are best to find the sch first and then the house rather than the other way around, otherwise you could have a longish commute on wacky races unncessarily, once you sign your lease its for 1 year and then you are stuck there.

Hi busybee2, Our budget is roughly 150k. Thx edited by ivy66 on 23/02/2012 well 150 wont get you much on island, an apartment yes but close to bsak a very very very old villa if you are lucky, most have been much more even with the prices coming down. for 150 you will get something out off island, at mbz or kca or kcb. kcb is my prefered choice as its much quieter, kca is manic trying to get in and out, as there are so many schools and banks etc up there the main junctions have major traffic disruptions, but of course it depends on what you want. kcb is 5 mins in the other direction, no big shops as such (only little ones) but there are many supermarkets across the motorway a mear 5 mins drive away. the new baniyas mall has a cinema car4 and many more shops. if you were going to be going for yasmina then you would be looking at off island anyway which is defo cheaper and you will get something for your 150 budget which seems to be about right for the market nowadays.

Hi ladies, thks for all your replies. sorry abt late reply i had a truck load of applications to do and i have been in touch with all the schools. Still trying with my daughter though. the NEC school only deals with uae nationals so that's one strike off. I've contacted the British learning Centre but i;ll have to visit to see if it suits her. Just wondering if there are mums doing home schooling out there and what resources they have or use just in case if that would be my last option. Now back to the questions - Bsak might be the one school that suits my older boy as he's going to do his A levels. can anyone recommend areas where/how to get accomodation near this school (on the island). Know of any available ones and what would be the price range. Thanks. bsak do alevels and also al yasmina. bsak on island and yasmina off island. whats your budget then i can say more

I am a Brighton College mum, and am really pleased. We changed from an IB school when we moved here to AD, and can say that we are delighted. There is a BCAD mums group on facebook, have a surf there, you will be able to see or ask questions for any of the year groups. Theres a Schools section on this site, look down the left hand side of here. edited by Delighted on 22/01/2012

Hi there As mentioned already bsak a very good school on the island. Off island there is al Yasmina which has a great reputation and also Brighton college. Have heard no mixed reviews regarding education but yes some of the teachers are disappointed with living arrangements and lots of parents fed up that the car parks are not finished, as for expectations from the classroom, superb! Can't tell you about bsad as don't know pupil, parent or teacher from there.

also they were only catering for children up to the age of 9 dont know if they have managed to increase that. they are trying to move to a purpose built environment which will be much larger this year aparently.

The New England Centre for autistic children is open to any one, but they give preference to local [emirati'> children, so the vast majority of children there are local. However there are a couple of non emirati children who have been accepted, so it's worth a shot. yeh they intended to open it to expats but they can only cater for a small amount and they will give prefence to local children, the expats that have been accepted have been allowed because of "other" factors so i believe. its always worth a try, you have to be in it to win it, but there is the intention to open it up to all eventually.

as mentioned bsak have already started to accept applications for next academic year, the schools go back on sunday so i would suggest that you call them all up to see what is available. if they have already started gcse/a levels they really dont like you moving around unless you can slot directly into the same subjects, but quite often the uk schools have better choice, so this may be a problem with your oldest 15, is that year 10 or year 11? brighton college is new and only started september, but they currently go up to year 9 only so you really need to look at bsak, yasmina or bisad as they will be the only ones that will cater for all year groups (depending on which year your 15 will be in). specials needs are not really catered much here. there is the future centre which has just moved premises to a bigger place in mbz but there is always a very big waiting list. the new england center is only for local children, they intend to open for expats but that hasnt happened yet.

Hi, You need to move fast regarding your boys. The british schools I would recommend are: British School Al Khubairat [oldest school, on island'> Al Yasmina [part of Aldar group, off island'> I have heard mixed reviews of these 3 schools, from staff and parents: Brighton College Al Bateen [also Aldar'> British International School of Abu Dhabi Just my opinion!!! I know Aldar schools and BSAK have started taking applications for next academic year, hence the need to move fast. Find their websites [only one I know is www.britishschool.sch.ae '> on google and they will let you know the application process. Regarding your daughter, I understand getting places in Special Needs schools is difficult. Try contacting The Future Centre and New England Children Centre [sorry, have a feeling that isn't the correct name'> and I am sure they can give you more advice. Abu Dhabi Education Council is keen for more inclusion, so it could be that in the not too distant future more opportunities will be open. In the local newspaper a few weeks ago there was an article about an autistic girl at Al Muna [again an Aldar school'>. I think it said she is 10 or 11, so will need secondary school soon - Al Muna feeds into Al Bateen [already mentioned'> so will they be making arrangements for her? Again, maybe worth contacting them. Hopefully someone with more info will post. Good luck. edited by ninap on 06/01/2012 edited by ninap on 06/01/2012
