Lately I have been wondering, if.......

The Colosseum was built 2000 years ago
The Acropolis over 2400 years ago
Ephesus 2500 years ago
Tower of Pisa over 800 years ago
(to name a few)

With all the advancement of technology in this day and age, how is the Burj a wonder today?

anyway, Saudi Arabia are building a taller Burj....so there! Dear God if its a hotel please spare us the mirrors above and behind the bed. DR, the only reason I hate mirrors above the bed is that I am terrified of them falling on me. I'd sooner die of a falling mirror than almost dying of fright like I did in the Burj a few years ago. I got into bed in such a way that I managed to just scare myself a wee bit - that was till I glanced behind me and nearly finished myself off because of what I saw in the mirror above the head board. Never again.

Well I don't there's anything in modern architecture than even comes close to some of the ancient achievements.

It's just tall...............that's all! True. In the early days I found it quite amazing. But now when I compare, I think the ones mentioned really do put it to shame.

I miss that too, we lived in several really old cottages where the old inglenook fire places had been covered up, we open them all back up - beautiful, all the old wooden beams in the ceiling etc.

Curious; who said the Burj is a wonder? Has it made some list? I have to add to the list the many, many old homes in the UK which are still lived in! My aunt's home was built during the reign of Elizabeth I, and there are handprints from descendents of the lady who built it (father, mother and baby) carved into a wooden windowsill which date back to c1700. This type of history in a home is something I miss here, but I guess they'll have it in a few hundred years :)
