I have been invited to the engagement party of a Pakistani lady and would like to give her/the couple a gift but not sure what's appropriate.

i am pakistani. engagements are usually followed closely by weddings. whereas not everyone will give engagement presents, all will give wedding presents. so to answer your qs, depending on how close you are to the bride/groom.....anything from a bouquet to something of personal use (as there is no house yet and they dont live together) will do.....perhaps a clutch, a piece of jewellery, a silk scarf, jewellery box etc. INFACT as the other posters said, any thing other than a bubbly WILL do :)

I have many pakistani friends(not a pakistani myself though). They love jewellery for any and every occassion. They love to wear it and love to recieve it as a gift. If that's out of your budget, perhaps you can give a gift voucher from a jewellery store. Hope that helps.

I think it is very considerate of the OP to ask what might be appropriate, so specifying the Nationality in her question is very significant. Some nationalities 'expect' gifts, for some it is not normal, some like cash, some frown upon giving cash... it's nice that someone cares enough to ask and doesn't just assume and then maybe make a faux pax...!

As most Pakistanis are muslims, a bottle of bubbly may not be appropriate. Also I would never expect anyone to BYOG to an engagement party. Presents are another matter. Some cultures think cash is appropriate, mine does not. So I can see the point of asking.

I think her question is one I would also ask if I was invited to an engagement party from a different culture. I just tried to google and I dint think you are required to give a gift at all or I certainly could not find any reference to it. Why not ask the bride to be :)...or a family member, I am sure they will be pleased to help you :)

I dont see the point of signifying a "Pakistani" Engagement!? Its an engagement party just like any other nationality party - Apart from Bubbly - take what u would do to any of your friends engagement party!!
