Thanks DubaiSammie, that actually sounds promising when you say it like that. Maybe there is hope... I wis hwe were there so the schools could assess my kids. Just read another thread that was talking about what Grade 3 kids were doing on a British Curriculum. I'm not sure, but it sounds streets ahead of what my son's class did last year in Grade 3. Anyway, I guess I'll leave it up to the professionals to determine. Kym: Will drop you an email tonight. Thanks for the offer.

Hi BMAP - just to add my Australian cent's worth ;-) During the school year, schools will accept children from outside the country (i.e. NOT already at a school in the UAE) over and above children who are currently schooled in the UAE. This is because of the rules set by the government. There's a couple of caveats to add to that statement, but what I'm trying to say is that you should put your child on the waiting lists of the schools you want ASAP; you have a higher chance of being called up. :-)

Thanks for your responses everyone. DH is in Dubai now but has to go back again late February. I am hoping (employer approval pending) I will be able to accompany him and do a site visit to a number of schools then. So between then and now I need to narrow the field and get application data together. All of your comments are helping immensely. Kim: Yes, I'm on the northside of Brisbane. Would love to pop you off an email and hear your opinions, if that's OK. I understand people have to be somewhat circumspect on here due to privacy reasons. It's difficult to get your message across sometimes. Simone, thanks, I spoke to another registrar today. I think part of the issue is our differing school year here automatically puts my kids behind the 8-ball. We are already 5 months behind you before we've even started. ANd that's not taking into account the weaknesses of the QLD curriculum. IN anycase, this registrar was very kind and very professional and is going to speak with the MoE regarding timing. Just makes me want that school more!!! Gina - thanks for that list of schools. A couple of them I've already researched, the rest will form the basis of my contingency list. Sending a virtual hug to you all. Seriously, this site is just the bee's knees.

Children from overseas join Jess, JAPS and DESS all the time. Don't believe all that you read on here. These schools are selective however and will give preference to academically strong children. They also do not give preference to British families as is always rumoured on this forum. You have to be pro-active and visit the schools personally.

BMAP - I think from memory that you're currently in Brisbane. I've just returned from a couple of years in Dubai and had three kids in Primary school. I've no idea how old your children are but do bear in mind that Dubai has a transient population and places at schools come up all the time. I know that we've had several children join the school at the beginning of this month due to other students leaving. Your best bet would be to ring the registrar, to fill out the application form and then follow up on a regular basis (this goes for all school, not just Jebel Ali). Best of luck with your move.

JAPS and Dubai Collage are the only two schools I would consider, If my children could not get into either of these schools I would NOT move to Dubai. I agree that these schools are good, but your post is misleading as there are other very good schools in Dubai, so OP please don't worry if your child(ren) don't get into these. From personal experience and feedback from friends whose kids are doing very well or have gone on to have good tertiary education and careers, the schools they went to include, in no specific order: Kings JESS - primary and secondary DESS JAPS The English College- primary and secondary Dubai College - high achievers only JPS - GEMS JC - GEMS There are also good non British Curriculum schools.

*sigh* OK I get the picture. But it sounds like I've got Buckley's of getting in, right???? I wish these schools would just say their waiting lists are closed on their websites. I have wasted an hour reading that ****** website last night when I could have been trying to find somewhere else where they actually have a spot! Jeez, this is pi$$ing me off! I just want to get on with getting my family over there and instead I am sitting on the friggin computer wasting my ****** time. Fair dinkum! I'm not even within coo-ee of getting somewhere at the rate I am going and now I'm getting madder than a cut snake! Calm down BMAP! I am going to ring the school today and see what's happenning. That is what I will do. Meanwhile I have to get my kids' stuff ready to start the new year at school back here tomorrow. Apologies for the dummy spit. Will now return you to your normal viewing programme...

Buy Me a Pony - If you get offered a place at JAPS, get in your car, hand in your fee cheque and dance down the road - great school, fab staff - most of whom are long-serving and QUALIFIED (ie. PGCEs have been attested - a big plus here in Dubai!) - your child will LOVE it. Don't think it's far away, it's not, just looks far on the map. Can't recommend it highly enough.

JAPS is a very very good school and if you got a place I'd take it like a shot. There are other good schools in Dubai as well. What may be right for you is not necessarily right for another child. There have been quite a few threads with regard to this school in the past so if you have time you should have a look.

Does anyone have any comments/feedback regarding Jebel Ali Primary School? Seems to be a smaller, community minded but well established British Curriculum School in Jebel Ali Village? Their website seems professional and I like the vibe I get re statements about parent involvement etc... Also noted that on google maps, there is a area titled "Dubai Colony" near there. Does anyone know what that is? Would Dubai Aluminium Factory impact the school in anyway (eg noise, pollution, traffic) as it is relatively close too? Thanks for anything you can give me.
