ok this is something i havent understood yet.
Emirates and other airlines allow you to take the carseat on to the flight and put it on a seat so your LO can sit in it, just like in the car????

wow! i dint even kno u cud take them onboard.. never ever seen one in a plane and i travel a lot. And usually have a squirming child on me, or he doesnt want to sit on me during take off and landing! Or he is sleeping on me! So where are these plane approved stickers usually? The ones I've seen have a little aircraft symbol - like you see on the road signs for the airport - somewhere on the safety sticker. I spoke to a friend at home about this the other day, though, and her car seat doesn't have the symbol but says on the website that it is airline approved. I can't for the life of me remember the brand.

Good to know Bianca how old was your little one? Did you need to purchase a seat and were they able to store it easily? We purchased a seat, yes. But if there are empty seats next to you, you normally are allowed to use them. Our LO was 4 months (we also had a bassinet and did not use the purchased seat because she slept the whole flight).

We have a Kiddy Infinity car seat which is air approved and pretty light weight - it uses the seats own seat belt to fix and doesn't have a harness type fitting. The only thing we did have to do is book a seat for DD (she is now 2 so we need to do this anyway) but we had minimal problems checking in with it. Can be used from 9mths I think. http://www.kiddy.de/en/childrens-car-seats/9months-4years/kiddy-infinity-pro.html Depending on the age/weight of your LO, you can also buy a CARES harness but that is really for toddlers/older kids - DD used on the last flight we did and was so much easier than trailing her car seat as its just a harness that fits in your handbag but feels much safer than just the lapbelt and kept her restrained!!

Sometimes the only thing telling you it's airline approved is a tiny little plane symbol somewhere on the seat, maybe on the safety sticker. It can be hard to find if it's even there at all. From memory we had several stage 0 (that's the one for new babies, right?!) ones on board with Emirates and my sister has taken a Maxi-Cosi stage 1 on with Air France. She had to battle with ground staff and crew at every stage, though. Oh, and they wouldn't let her put the seat in the middle of the row - it had to go in the window seat. ETA: I'm not sure how many car seats are actually airline approved and what airlines ask for them to be. We used to at EK but maybe not now? edited by DubaiCat on 27/01/2011

We were allowed to use our maxi cosi and it was not airplane approved. Just not during take off and landing.

The only carseat that i have been aware of being able to be taken onto a flight is a sit and stroll. You can purchase them from babyshop or some pharmacies for around 1000aed. They have stickers on them to show to the airline hostesses. However friends have taken them on many a flight and you get asked at every single stop that you cannot take them on the plane. This is until you show them the stickers and reassure the staff that your allowed too. You have to purchase a ticket to allow for the seat to be used with the car seat also. i would not risk taking it and not having pre-purchased a seat as you will not only be dealing with explaining the car seat but also trying to get a seat to put it in. It can be very stressful enough getting the staff to allow it on let alone getting a 'free' seat also. Just giving you many of my close friends experiences. Xx

If you pay for a seat for your infant, then you can have it on a seat. If you don't pay for a seat, then just ask the crew if you can take it onboard in case the seat next to you is free (or ask if there are other spare seats you could move to). Depending on the size of the car seat, it may fit in a wardrobe or overhead locker if you can't have it on the seat and don't want it in the hold. In both cases, in order to be used in a seat the car seat needs to have an 'airline approved/compatible' sticker on it or other proof it's been tested as suitable to fit in an aircraft seat. From the distant memory of my time as crew so feel free to correct me if this is no longer applicable! :D.

I believe it all depends on whether the flight is full or not. Our last flight was with Cathay Pacific and they would not allow our car seat onboard. They said the only way we would get our car seat onboard was if we actually purchased the seat in which the car seat would sit on. I have in the past heard of people being allowed to take their car seats onboard flights (all different airlines), but again, those flights I know were not full so maybe thats why they were allowed.
