Can I use antibiotics whilst breastfeeding. I have done a search but am confused now. Some websites say its okay and others say you have to wean your baby first. Anyone used antibiotics whilst breastfeeding? I have a severe upper respiratory infection and need to treat it as Im really suffering.

The doc prescribed Amoxcillin 500mg antibiotics. He said its fine for breastfeeding mums but living in Dubai for 10 years I dont really trust doctors here. I called my aunt who is a pediatrician and works in a New York hospital. She also said amoxcillin is fine and small traces of the meds do go into the breastmilk but its so little it has no effect on the baby. Im not ready to wean and Im happy to be able to take meds and feed my bubs. Thanks ladies! :) I think that's one of the ones that's given to children anyway... the name rings a bell.

Oh gosh yes of course, but I didn't think that was the question. It's always a good idea to cover all bases! Pharmacists here have happily sold me steroid cream, anti-inflammatories, anti-biotic creams and pills without even asking who they were for, let alone if they were appropriate or stating the doses. Scary!

Unfortunately it isn't as simple as that. Doctors are not lactation specialists and often it helps for Mum to have evidence based information to discuss with her doctor as they choose the best treatment option for her. I have come across too many mums who have unnecessarily terminated their Bf relationship prematurely or who have delayed treatment for themselves because they were wrongly told that their meds were incompatible w Bf. Have also seen the opposite; Mum told by doc that meds ok while Bf, when they are not. sure, but this is a place where you can buy all kinds of strictly-speaking prescription medication over the counter, so rather than self-medicating, a consultation with a knowledgeable dr is a must.

Ideally doctor would have access to the info they need...but in the UAE they do not and it never hurts to double check a medicine that the doc has prescribed. edited by BFC on 17/02/2011

never take any medication apart from paracetamol without consulting your Dr first... it's as simple as that.

Probably fine (but it depends on which antibiotic it is). Very few drugs are completely contraindicated during lactation, but there are some which carry some risk. Most however either do not pass into breastmilk, pass through in negligible amounts, or are safe for babies. If you'd like me to check the one you have, I have a copy of [i'>Medications and Mother's Milk [/i'> which lists the information for each drug. Give me a ring on 050-4705577 after 5:30 in the evenings. (Edited to take out personal phone no.) edited by BFC on 20/02/2011
