hello everyone,

We have a gorgeous 3 year old turkish angoran white cat and were finally ready to have kittys..i have no idea how it works here though..how do we get her a suitable mate? we were looking for her to have a similar hubby or persian male cat..back home you would just find someone willing to mate with your female and either pay them smthing or offer them the first kitten...etc

just to clarify, we are not breeding to sell etc, just that we would totally love for her to atleast have 1 litter before we spay her(is this the femal way or is it neuter) our vet advised this would be a good idea! we would love to see her have some company and have her lil kiddies with her...

anyone who could advise?

Thanks for telling us the outcome fluffypie, you are a true pet lover to do this for your "baby". Hope you told your old vet what an idiot he is.

Dear all, sorry for not responding sooner..had a family crisis. anyway, i can safely say this was indeed a stupid idea. i changed vets (now with mordern vet in jumeirah) and he advised me that my cat doesnt need to have a litter to avoid cancer and then spay her... so we decided to go ahead and do her spaying there and then. he also explained and clarified lots of stuff i wa sbeing told by my previos vet that was bullcrap! my previous vet is in Qusais - deira vet clinic, and we trusted (ot thought we did) as he was a referal..and was also slightly cheaper then the rest! Thanks so much once again for all your eye openining advise!

Fluffypie may not have considered the broader issues of wanting to do this. The vet on the other hand is an incompetent idiot. Would love to know who the vet is to let him/her know what I think of such stupidity. *LIKE*!!! A vet who advises any form of backyard breeding is a complete incompetent!! I just cannot believe a professional in this field is essentially advising people to add to the homeless pet problem in the UAE. I know your heart if in the right place and that you intend on keeping these kittens, fluffypie, but this 'vet' will also be giving this same advice to others who couldn't care less where the babies end up. It's also outdated, incorrect advice that having a litter is good for your cat's health. You are being very poorly advised fluffypie. Please change vets today. edited by Green-ish on 21/03/2011

I'm in just the right mood today to agree with the others and let you know that this is the most ignorant thing... EVEN BACK HOME...to want to breed a cat would be borderline ridiculous in this economy and present state of animal shelters all over the WORLD. I certainly have not heard of a country that doesn't have issues with animals that need help!!! Good grief! I am slowly losing faith in mankind today - I am however glad to see that other posters had the courage to speak up about it!!!

Completely agree with all the comments below. One thing I want to add is.. Change your vet immediately!! He doesn't have the slightest idea! And please please share his name. Just a week ago, a (really really arrogant) friend of mine had a litter, none of the kittens survived and the mother cat is desperately looking for her kittens, and she has to watch this. Cats don't need to give birth, they would be lucky to spend 2 months with their babies and then have to go through the trauma of seperation. Why put her through this?

I fully agree with all the below comments...If your cat is lonely, there are 100's of cats and kittens looking for a home. "dont breed or buy, while shelter pets die" :(

fluffypie, fortunately for your cat and for your budget, you've come to the right place to be told you are mad if you so ahead with this. Neuter your cat now for her long-term health and adopt a playmate from any one of the rescue organisations. :)

Please tell me you are a newcomer here and do not know of the plight of hundreds of beautiful cats in the UAE waiting at feline friends and similar organisations for a family to love them. I do not believe a vet would advise you to let your cat have a litter of kittens as they are often the ones dealing with the putting down of stray and unloved animals because of selfish breeding like you are suggesting For goodness sake, if you want 11 cats in your home, go to a shelter and adopt.

I'll be even more blunt, besides not being bright the vet is irresponsible to suggest that this is a "good idea". What happens if the cat has 6 kittens - are you prepared to raise and look after 7 cats for the next 12 - 15 years. Annual vaccinations, moving them with you if you decide to leave the country. It's not cheap - just the food and litter and annual vaccinations will cost you 1000s each year, let alone if they need any medical treatment. Contrary to popular belief, cats (nor dogs) do not [i'>need[/i'> to have babies before they are spayed or neutered. They are actually less likely to develop certain cancers if they do not and are spayed and neutered at an appropriate age. Get yourself a competent vet and educate yourself about the costs involved and the risks to your animal.

sorry, but your vet is not very bright. It is not proven that it is better for a cat to have a litter before spaying. this sounds like the same vet that said cats should not be spayed or neutered because it will make them sick. Love to know the name of your vet. anyway. If you want a friend for your cat go over to www.felinefriendsdubai.com and check out the ones for adoption. That is the tip of the iceberg though. There are also other organizations who have kittens to rehome. People desperate to rehome kittens here that I just cannot understand why anyone would be irresponsible enough to intentionally have a litter of kittens because their cat is lonely!!! or, maybe you just are not aware :)..now you are :)...anyway, I am sure there will be more thoughts on this subject :)....FF also have a female turkish angora about 2 years old looking for a home, she could be a friend.
