Hi Ladies,

Quite worried as my son is now 9 months, but he doesnt have teeth yet, doesnt show interest in walking, cannot sit alone without support, doesnt like to eat much of solid foods otherwise he'll choke, most of his batchmates/younger than him have teeth, can sit alone and shows interest in walking and eating solid foods already!

Please help! :_(

He also started to climb & act like a normal toddler few days back. He was soo laid back & lazy & used to spend hours reading books & taking lay-ins intread of playing. Now he doesnt stop moving, jumping & playing. But he's an early talker & he started to talk using proper words at 8 months. Now he talks in sentences in English & Arabic & he can recognise few letters & numbers. Babies are different hun xx edited by wickedangel_78 on 21/04/2011 That's really interesting, actually. I've heard that babies can't develop motor skills and for want of a better word "intellectual" skills at the same time - they alternate them. So yes, WA, your son was obvious concentrating on his language rather than his motor skills! I have to say, also, that DS is far more careful and coordinated than his sister, even if he hardly says a word, whereas she can rattle off 16 to teh dozen, but is like a bull in a china shop when it comes to anything physical! Hiya. Just to put your mind at ease. DD was born 9 weeks early and we have ALWAYS worried about milestones and development. She started turning both sides on her own at 7 months actual (4.5 adjusted), started sitting up on her own at 11 months actual (8.5 months adjusted), started army crawling at 10 months actual and proper crawling after 12 months actual and pulling up and cruising very unsteadily at 13 months actual. She is extremely vocal and only recently said her first word (APPLE.... where the heck is mama?). We always ask her paed if she needs physio or EI and she says No. Everytime I worry she wont do something, two weeks later she is doing it. Oh and she is cutting her first tooth just about now (14 months actual and 11.5 adjusted... at least I did not get bitten while bfing). With regards to milestones, believe it or not there is a + or - 3 months range for each milestone! We mums worry about everything. Dont worry, BUT if you do not see progress and mum's instinct is telling you to check thing out, go and do it. Your son sounds like he is doing fine.

Hi hun. DS had his teeth one week after his birthday & he had 3 teeth on the same day & the 4th after 2 days. Now at 17 months he has 6 teeth (2 teeth are still missing) but he started to have molars 2 months back & he already have 4. He started to crawl at around 9.5 months & he also started to cruise but he was very cautious. We were surprised when he finally let go & took few steps few days before his birthday. He wasnt interested in solids & until now at I have to spoon feed him as he will not hold his own food. He started to show interest in food at 15 months but he doesnt eat any types of snacks like biscuits, cookies, cakes or crisps. He still not so interested in fresh fruits but he will eat some fruit pots with lots of distractions. He eats one main meal at lunch & 2 snack meals with 2-3 milk feeds. He also started to climb & act like a normal toddler few days back. He was soo laid back & lazy & used to spend hours reading books & taking lay-ins intread of playing. Oh my, thank you very much ladies for all your kind words & advices. You are all absolutely correct, he must be a li'l laid back on practicing being an adult & still enjoying being carried & pampered all the time! :) I almost cried reading all your messages... :( Just to correct, my son doesn't like to sit without support but we tried to leave him unsupported some time & he can balance his body, he's just a lazy one! :) I will surely post the great news once the two front teeth popped out!!! Just thought I'd comment since my second DS is 9months next week. My two are complete night and day. My first DS now 3: Got 4 teeth at 7 months. Hardly sat on his own til he was almost 8 months. Didn't crawl until almost 10 months (that was an army crawl), started cruising around 11, didn't walk til 14-15 months. He also ate solids early and was on chunky stuff by 9 or 10 months. I only know the dates because I was writing stuff in their first year calendars the other day. our youngest: still has no teeth. been feeling a bump for a while but nothing has popped out. Sat at 4 months, crawled at 6 months, pulled himself up and took a few steps around furniture at 8 months. Always wanting to stand now and its driving me nuts :) I always compared with my first especially when it came to talking. DS hardly said any words and we were told to consider speech therapy. As soon as his 3rd bday came around he started saying more words and making sentences. Now we have no clue where he learns certain words. And he won't shut up :) A good piece of advice I was told was that don't ever compare two babies because none will be the same. Only start to worry if there is an extreme delay in development and your dr starts to get concerned. And finally when they are in grade 1 no one will be able to tell who got teeth first, who walked first and who never crawled.

yup, DD never crawled until about 2 weeks before she took her first steps. DS was crawling and cruising really early but only decided to walk for himself at 15 months. DD was stringing words together at 15 months, DS isn't really even saying one at nearly 2 years old. DD had her full set of teeth by about 18 months, DS still has 6 and a half to go at 22 months... I have a friend whose son crawled and rolled all over the place, but didn't show any interest in walking... at all... until he was nearly 2, at which point, he stood up, ran and kicked a football across the room! They're all so different and do things in different ways... their own way. Believe me, by the time they're 3, they'll all have reached the same point. However, if your son can't stay sitting up when plomped on the floor in a sitting position, or if he has trouble holding his head up, then take him to see a Paediatrician.

Enjoy this time with him and I swear one day it just happens-all of a sudden he is walking over to you and chatting up a storm ;)

The age that a child gets teeth is not a developmental milestone so cross that one off your list for a start. Some babies never crawl, simply go straight to walking and that can be long after the first birthday. Perhaps he's just content to sit and watch the world go by. They are born with the personality that they have and perhaps he's just a laid back little soul. Solid foods are only for 'fun' until they are one year, they should get most of their calories/nutrition from milk in one form or another. Did you make sure that he's sat completely upright when he's eating? Even the slightest incline can be a choking risk. Don't be fooled into thinking that all other babies his age or younger are interested in walking. That's simply not true. I honestly wouldn't worry yet. Just enjoy his gummy smiles and his immobility because boy when those teeth come and he's nipping you and you start finding him stood up on the window ledge, you'll laugh at yourself for ever being worried about him!

Please help! :_( Personally I wouldnt worry too much. They all develop differently. By 8.5 months my DD had no teeth, couldnt roll, could only just sit up, didnt make much noise and I was feeling the same. By 10 months she had 4 teeth, was walking and was really ahead of all the other kids her age that I knew, and now at 17 months she has the vocabulary of a 2.5yr old. Honestly, bear with him, he's probably storing it all up and one day he will get up, run across the room and ask for a biscuit! :)

I think everything except the sitting up part sound perfectly fine. Can he not sit unsupported, or just not get himself up into a sitting position? Stop comparing your baby to other kids. There are always fast ones and slow ones. If you are concerned, talk to your ped. about it and see what he advises. Most of the times we moms are too worried and are stressing over nothing. Most probably your son will make a huge developmental leap very soon. In the meantime, enjoy it that he's not so mobile yet. It'll get a lot harder once they stand up, walk and climb and get their little hands onto everything!

HI. You can have a developmental check with a western paedatric physiotherapist (walking/sitting), occupational therapist (play skills) and speech and language therapist (feeding and socialization/talking) at Rashid Paediatric Therapy Centre in Al Barsha. The assessment is one hour with all three at the same time for 300dhs. They will either ease your mind that your LO is developing within normal ranges or give advice on where to seek out services to help them get back on track (if they can't help you themselves!) :) The number is 04 340 0005 and just ask to fill out an Early Intervention referral. Hope this helps!
