Di, I would take the shots if I were her. My SIL had the same problem and was not given the correct treatment with her first pregnancy. Although the risk of blood mixing is small in a first pregnancy, the hassles she has had since then with recurrent miscarriages and heartache - it's just not worth it if there is a way to prevent it. Babies born to mothers whose immune response has been triggered, can be very ill. There is no way to reverse this state once it has been triggered; she will have the antibodies against any Rh positive babies she carries for life. Thanks - I will advise them to have the shots, it definately makes sense to prevent the possiblility of any complications than to run a risk.

I'm negative and DH is positive so I had the shot at 28 weeks and 34 weeks. I have no clue if I had a shot after DS was born! I'll have the same again with this pregnancy even though DS turned out to be negative too.

I am rh neg. With my 3 kids I have had I think 3 jabs each pregnancy ( well one just after delivery!) can't remember when the first jab is but 2nd was around 29 weeks. Also was told if you have any bleed you need a jab. yeh i had bleeding during my first pregnancy so had to have the jab, but in the end it turned out that baby was negative too!

Many thanks salsB & moonbeam for all the detailed info, baby's blood type is unknown, its 28 weeks gestation, but based on what you say they could safely opt for the shots now. I can pass on some reassuring news now! :)

Hi I'm the same, my 1st pregnancy I only had the jab as soon as I gave birth. But here I was given one at 29 weeks and will be given another one as soon as I deliver. There are no reactions to the baby, so no worries there. It's just to make sure if there was bleeding baby will be ok. But if you do bleed, you need an injection asap. In majority of cases of RH incompatibility, mother and baby are usually fine. Your friend just needs to make sure she mentions it to other doctors during pregnancy eg if she was to have a blood transfusion or anything like that. HTH

Just found this on internet, hope it helps. Rh factor incompatibility can be prevented by administration of the RhoGAM shot. Because baby's blood does not usually mix with the mother's until birth, first pregnancies usually have no risk for problems to baby. During birth, bits of the baby's blood will mix with the mother's blood. The RhoGAM shot should be given within 72 hours of birth. This shot will stop the mother from developing antibodies to the Rh factor. Because there is a slight risk of placental tears during the later part of pregnancy, the RhoGAM shot is often given at 28 weeks of pregnancy as well. If your baby's blood type is Rh negative, the RhoGAM shot is not necessary. The RhoGAM shot only provides temporary immunity so it will be necessary to have the shot given after each birth, miscarriage, or induced abortion.

Thanks for the reply Laura2 & salsB- so I take it there was no adverse reation to the babies hopefully when you took the shots before birth? edited by Di@DXB on 23/04/2011

Mum to be is Rh negative and husband Rh postive. They have been told by one doctor to have an injection of Rho immune globulin now even though tests show no anti bodies in mother's blood. Another doctor says to wait until the baby is born since this is the first pregnancy. What is the best course of action, anyone been though this? Is there any risk to the baby or mother in having the injection before delivery. TIA
