bottlefeeding help needed for breastfeed 4 MO!

Daisydog, I have had a similar problem. I did not introduce a bottle early enough and struggled with it. I came back to work when DD was 2.5 months and it took my MIL (who visited us at the time) 3 days to convinced DD to drink from the bottle. Love and patience. There were lots of tears, but we just had to do it. For a start I was not near when she gave her a bottle (LO can smell you plus I couldnt bear the tears of DD); MIL would give a bottle to DD when she was not hungry so she played with a teat, we also gave her a bottle at the play time. When DD cried my MIL would sooth her and try to give her a bottle again. There was no forcing it - just time, patience, love and perseverance. W tried different devices (Medela has special cups etc), but at the end pigeon wide teat worked for us. HTH & good luck!

My DD refused to take EBM/formula in anything but boob form until she was a year, she had no problems in drinking water from a glass/cup from 5 months. I tried giving her the bottle everday several times a day from when she came home from the hospital. I even did the starvation thing, left her with hubby for a day left her with my mum for a day. Nothing worked. You may need to get who ever is looking after her to feed her with a dropper/spoon.

thanks hello again kitty... havent tried sippy cups yet...would like DD to have the comfort of a bottle...how did you get your DD to take a sippy cup? :) I just gave it to her! It wasn't to replace breastfeeding though because I didn't need to get her onto bottles for any particular reason. She just had it with water in to go with her solid meals (yes, I weaned her at 18 weeks - eeek!)

My niece is now 11 months and refused a bottle for months. My sister's been trying probably since she was about six months old. All of a sudden, two weeks ago, she changed her mind and my sister's been able to stop BF. I know that probably won't be all that reassuring since you need to go back to work soon and not wait till 11 months, but I just wanted to share to show it can happen! Good luck :). And while I'm here, when we decided to stop BF the first feed we changed to bottle was the dreamfeed. DH went and popped the teat in DS's mouth while he was sleeping and it worked first time. Then we gradually switched more feeds over the course of a week or so.

yup, hate to say it, but it may be too late. I made that mistake with DD and she flat-out refused and never took a bottle. I talked to my mother-in-law about it at the time (who's very knowledgeable with small babies, if a tad Old Skool) and she said that the only way to do it is to hand your baby over for a couple of days and let someone else do it - someone who she doesn't associate with breastfeeding, someone who the baby trusts and most importantly, someone who isn't going to crumble when bubs screams. Yes, hardcore. Apparently, one of my nieces had to have this done to her, 'cos ex-SiL wanted to stop bf suddenly. Have you tried using a sippy cup? Both my two could use them from about 4 months, so that might do the trick. I do think it's important that you aren't the one doing it though - I mean, your DD knows that you have milk on tap and will protest if you don't give it to her, whereas if you're not around, she may be more willing to take what's on offer from others.

hi ladies, I have a 4 MO DD who refuses to bottlefeed with expressed or formula milk.have tried all the tricks _ someone else to give the bottle, different teats, bottles etc. different times of day, different feeding positions, tried to make bottlefeeding fun. have yet to starve my baby into submission which i just dont think i can do.... going back to work so starting to panic...any ideas? thank you!
