What to do with DS while I have his little brother or sister!

We're trying to plan how we're going to work things when I'm in hospital having baby #2. My main concern is maintaining some kind of normality for DS, as I really don't want him to either feel shoved out of the way or upset because he misses me and/or us.

Clearly DH will need to be there for the birth but would he then be better off staying home with DS to make sure he's OK? I'll have the nurses to look after me and hopefully some friends too.

Any suggestions very welcome :).

I never thought of it that way. Thanks! And PS: Is your sister a masochist?! I thought I wanted three or four and then I had one :D.

it was a breeze at hospital lol looking after a newborn and not my 2 yr old lol. This is what I'm thinking! Normally I don't get a second to sit still when he's awake so it may well be a blissful rest! .. My sister has four children (and is considering #5 :D ) and she refers to her post-birth hospital stay as her "five star holiday". For most of us, that time in hospital is the only time in that new child's life that you will ever have one-on-one time with him/her, with ZERO other distractions. No older siblings to attend to, no meals to prepare...nothing but resting and cuddling that precious new family member.

DH is somewhat concerned we'll find his doll with its arms and legs pulled off...

Thanks all. I am having a planned C-section thanks to my spine problems (decision taken out of my hands = result!) so I will be in there a few days at least. I would feel much happier knowing DH's at home looking after the little guy, so I guess it's better for him to do that and for me to take full advantage of 24/7 nursing care and get as much rest as I can! A couple of friends have suggested getting him a toy baby to play with over the next few weeks, and getting one for me too, so we can both have a 'baby' and then when the real thing arrives he still has his baby while I have the newborn. Has anyone tried this? Hi I've just had my 3 rd c section I have a 10 yr old and a 2 yr old , I got my 2 yr old playing with a doll before hand like feeding bottles, changing nappy she loved it, I think it really helped as I was so worried how jealous she d be. As I couldn't even cuddle my friends baby without her having a meltdown. My lo is 7 days old and all good so far she s my helper in putting nappies in bin and holding his bottle s when feeding and giving him his pacifier . At the birth I had my parents over so she could stay at home in her normal routine. As soon as I felt alot better on day 3 she came to visit, it was a breeze at hospital lol looking after a newborn and not my 2 yr old lol.

It's better that your DS will be with his father and other members of family (if they are here) and friends :) It will be also nice if you can buy a present for him and take it to hospital with you, so once he comes to visit, you can give it as a present from his little brother or sister :) This way DS will feel special and may be not a bit jealous :) that's what we did when #2 arrived :)

hehe - DD went to bed, as normal (mummy was a bit too busy to read her a story) and by morning, she had a little brother. Sometimes it's just that simple! Same for number three for us. We moved house during the day, set the kids rooms up in the early evening, dinner, bath, bed...new baby a couple of hours later. I was very fortunate to have trusted live-in help at the time so she stayed in the house with the sleeping children and my husband was home before sunrise. I'd send your husband home to be with the little man. Let you have some precious babymoon time alone with your new little bundle of love! :D

DH at home and you at the hospital with the nurses - that's what worked best for us for numbers 2, 3, and 4. Frankly, after number 1, I knew what I was doing and DH was a bit superfluous in the first few days. I felt better knowing he was home with DS and there was so much running around to be doing with the paperwork for the UAE and passports, that I wouldn't have seen him much anyways. DH also took DS1 and DD1 (when the time came) out for special treats and spoiled them a bit, which was nice for them.

This is something that FREAKED me out leading up to the birth of my second. My mum and sister where out, so I knew DS would be happy at home, but as it was going to be his first time without me - I prefered DH to stay with him. The first night the nurses actually invited DS to stay at the hospital with DH, but we decided not to, as it would be more noisy for everyone involved and although DS cried buckets when he left me, he at least got a good nights sleep at home and was fresh in the morning ready to deal with the new excitement and added stresses of having this new "creature" in his life. DH also slept much better which is always a good thing (lol) so all round, it worked for us! Wish I hadnt stressed out about it as much as i did. Hindsight huh ;-)

Your DS will be fine staying home with his father and coming to visit you in the hospital. Most children go through this once or twice and are fine.:)
