If u carry a doctor's letter do they exempt you from going thru x ray door at airpots.

Any advise in this regard is appreciated.

I have to agree with GattaMata that the machines you usually pass through are metal detectors and therefore safe for pregnant women. I'm 4 months pregnant and have been travelling for work up to 4 or 5 times a month and always pass through the metal detectors. What has concerned me more is that according to Dr. Oz, 30 hours of flying is equivalent radiation exposure as one chest x-ray!

Tia If you mean the standard metal detectors, they are very low level electromagnetic waves, not dangerous at all. As for the new x-rays machines, which are not everywhere yet, the radiation grade is 1/1000 of the classic x-ray exposure during a scan, and each passage corresponds to the exposure you get in two minutes' flight in a plane. At least this is what they say, officially. Of course if you don't feel safe you can ask the security to bypass it, as the other ladies are suggesting. edited by GattaMatta on 17/10/2011

its always good to have a back up so if your going to the doc anyway it cant hurt to get a letter... but anyone can refuse to go through the machines pregnant or not... you will just have to be patted down instead.

we travelled last month and i was amazed at how helpful the security people were. they could see i was pregnant and did not hesitate opening a side door or moving things around so that i didnt have to go through the xray machines. i didnt carry a letter from my doctor either.

No you do not have to go through the machines (any of them) they will give you a pat down though... you dont need a dr. note either... i flew multiple times my first pregnancy, and every airport i went through wouldnt LET me go through the machines... i didnt even know it to be an issue until they stopped me from going through... however this pregnancy i have also flown multiple times (im due in a few weeks) and they try to send me through like regular... so confusing that i couldnt before but now i can... either way just to be safe i tell them im pregnant and dont want to go through... most of the time they say ok with no problem, i have a had a few of the people say "its okay to go through, no problem" but i still just say id rather not and its no issue.

When I was pregnant, I didn't have to go through any x-ray machines. I told the security that I was pregnant and they allowed me to walk through the side of the x-ray machine and patted me down to check for anything dodgy. Just tell security you are pregnant.

I would imagine that for security reasons you would not be exempt from going through the X Ray machines... Even with a Dr's note? wouldnt it be a huge security risk?
