Thx green-ish I haven't yet had chance to look at web in detail. Have subscribed to the Nicole Nicola? One and have hardly had chance to read that. Will get there!
We are off on holiday tomorrow, 2 nights Abu dhabi then bk here then off to south Africa for new years. DS will of course be sleeping in same room as us whilst away so I figure we try to deal with sleep problems on return, which will hopefully give me time to read more.
DC- u have the book green-ish is talking about yeah? Can I borrow if so.
...
Ds has never been a good sleeper, think we attended to him so much when he was younger rather than giving him the chance to settle himself first so have shot ourselves in the foot really.
PLEASE do not put that pressure on yourself. Tiny babies are supposed to be attended to. They need you to help them feel secure and safe. You have done nothing wrong! xx
Wow...you must be utterly physically and emotionally knackered. :(
I have used CIO before with the assistance of a sleep specialist. With apologies for adding to your stress, I really think that if "His little voice is so hoarse with all the crying." then it's not working. :(
CIO is not for every baby/toddler/family. It saved us and I'm always happy to try to support parent's trying to implement it, but sometimes you just have to admit that it's not working as you are currently doing it. Sorry. :(
Did you have a chance, despite your exhaustion, to look at the Marc Weissbluth site that kiwispiers suggested? I have his book "Healthy Sleep Habits, Happy Child" and it's brilliant. Really easy to read, broken into sections specific to the child's age and it worked for us later on when CIO didn't. He does suggest a version of CIO in some cases, but you can absolutely follow his plan without CIO. I wish I had the book before I ever used CIO in the first place. ;)
[u'>Sometimes[/u'> it really is as 'simple' as tweaking your soothe-to-sleep routine and the timing of naps & bedtime.
Fingers crossed for more sleep for all of you soon.
So after a couple of nights of successful sleep thoughts and I only mean 2 complete no waking at all since we thought CIO had worked ds is back to usual 11.30-2.30 screaming headoff. We are at our wits end. I've even taken him to doc to be checked and he is in good health.
We don't know what else to do we just want our little boy to sleep!!!!!!
Thx all I will have a look at the sites you have posted. Last night was 40 mins to get to sleep with 1 20 min wake and cry at midnightish. Today for nap he took about 8 mins crying, tonight going optometrist bed 3 mins... Will wait to see what the night holds, I've got my iPod ready to plug in my ears.
His little voice is so hoarse with all the crying.
Hmmm I don't know if he understands / senses about ds2. I do share the scan pictures with him and tell him he use to be in mummies tummy just like his little brother is now. He has certainly noticed my tummy is bigger, he comes and pats or rubs it sometimes. Lol.

I can't help/support re: the CIO but as the mum of a nearly 16 month old who for a very very long time needed help with resettling in the night I can totally sympathize on not only the associated fatigue but the complete dread of how much longer it might continue to be this way.
As SG says consider an earlier bedtime vs a later nap, it worked for us and might work better for you and LO. You might want to check out the [url=http://weissbluthmethod.wordpress.com/2010/11/29/nap-facts-18-months/'>weissbluthmethod blog [/url'>, I didn't personally follow the CIO part but got lots of useful tips re nap timings/bedtimes working with your baby's inbuilt body-clock etc and the forum there might be a good place to get support from other mums currently going the CIO route if you decide to stick with it.
Something to think about, I read once (sorry no idea where) that babies/toddlers have emotional developmental milestones and there were certain periods where CIO would be very difficult and it might be better to wait until the next window, maybe google that and see if its useful. I know that my guy around a month ago went through a phase where I had to pat him to sleep everytime he woke, I think it was a sort of separation anxiety, he didn't need food, drink or even picking up he simply needed confirmation I was still in the room. If you do decide to wait until he is emotionally more ready to resettle himself, a way of coping in the meantime might be for DH to move in to DS's room so he can talk him back to sleep at night. Friends of ours did this when their second baby arrived, Mummy had the newborn and Daddy the toddler.
Oh and get WD40 onto your door handle and hinges, and consider a "light-trap"double curtain instead of the door so you can sneak out without detection. ;)
AussiePup I feel for you Must be very hard with sleepless nights of a toddler and pregnancy as well...
Just wanted to tell you that I did the C.I.O with my DS He was much younger but it was the best decision I ever took It is hard and there were tears from me and even DH not only DS Once we knew he had enough food during the day we didn't open the door to his room until next day in the morning We can hear him occasionally during the night but he learned to settle by himself He chats for a while when he goes to bed and when he gets up as well but never cries
If you took the decision to do the C.I.O stick with it and hopefully you'll be all well rested after a full night sleep really soon Keep us posted
Good luck
I feel for you...that sounds really tough :(
have you ever looked at this site - www.thebabysleepsite.com? She has lots of good articles and also does one on one consultations...I was on the verge of contacting her when we saw Cecile...
do you think it could also have to do with the fact that you are pregnant? Just a guess here, but maybe your DS also senses another one is coming and is wanting more of your/your DH's attention?
really hope you can sort it out soon.
Ds is 17 mths today.
We use Cecile and have tried the 20-5-20 method she suggested as well as longer 45-5-45 he basically goes ok for the first week or so then gets that we come back after the 2nd set and we use anything to get him to sleep. This has reverted to sitting in his room for what can be up to 1.5 hrs and trying to sneak out hoping he doesn't hear us. If he does he cries. If he realizes we are gone he cries. We have tried the whole move further out of the room each night to eventually just standing outside room and calling bed time so he knows we are still there but as soon as he knows we aren't there he cries and doesn't stop til he sees us. We have tried e.a.s.y too and now with having tried all the rest c.I.o is about what's left?
c.I.o seems to be only option left. We have always given ds his bottle in his room with lights off, we've been advised to change that, put low light on or even do quietly downstairs so that ds is awake when being put in his cot instead of milk drunk tired. He has a glow worm he has taken to so that is with him in his cot. He has never taken to a dummy.
I just wasn't expecting him to get worse with crying as he did last night and today... Everything I've heard re c.I.o says each night will get easier.... Errr no not in our case.
I'm 22 weeks pg with ds2. Tired and emotional more than usual of course but we really wNt to nip this in the bud before #2 comes along
Hi Aussiepup,
as JoannaS said, how old is your LO? I have heard the older they are, the more difficult CIO can be but it always depends on the individual. My DS is 6 and a half months old and we did some CIO about a month ago but only let him cry for 20 mins then gave him his dummy and helped him back to sleep. We luckily only had to do it once the first night and he slept through and then occasionally in the weeks after he would wake and we would wait but after about 5-10min he would settle himself. If it ever gets to 20 mins of being awake with any sign of crying or whinging, we always go to him so he knows we always will come, just not immediately. Now if he wakes he tends to just chat and we leave him. I can feel your pain though as listening to them cry is awful, it was hard enough for 20 mins just the few times let alone listening to it for that long!! We used Cecile De Scally during this bit of training - are you using her or just doing it on your own? It can really help to have someone to advise and support you...Also, is your LO going through any teething or anything else that might be upsetting him?
Having said all that, if the 10-12noon nap works, why rock the boat? You could always see if he needs a shorter nap or catnap later in the day to get through to 7pm, or put your LO to bed earlier? What time does your LO get up in the morning? We are up with our DS around 7, then he goes down for 45 min to an hour about 9am, then has another 2 hour (sometimes mores, sometimes less) nap around 12-2ish and then he is good to go until bedtime (around 6.30pm).
Hope you sort this out soon - I know how difficult it can be with LO that doesn't sleep well!! Hugs.
Hi AussiePup,
How old is your LO? He sounds very similar to my daughter, who from the day one was a bad sleeper. We tried E.A.S.Y., we tried some kind of CIO, but all with no luck. At app. 18 months - we realised that she may be over stimulated in the evenings - after bath we dim lights, limit TV to one cartoon, she gets her milk in the living room and after this we take her to our bedroom to read, after reading we switch the lights off and three of us lie down for 15-20 minutes. She wiggle for some time, but eventually relaxes (is still awake tho) and off we go to her bedroom, where she goes to sleep without problems.
It works very well for us. HTH
Hi all
We are now at the stage we have tried soooooooo many methods to gets ds to sleep and settle when he wakes that now all we are left with is cry it out. It's awful. Instead of getting shorter crying/screaming time he has gotten longer! Today is day 3 but will be night 4 tonight. First nights was 1.5 hrs of crying with us going in every 20-30 mins, saying in a firm voice, we love you, it's bedtime go to sleep! Giving him his glow worm toy and leaving room. So that was 2 nights of that.
Last night he woke 3 times, the first time took 15 mins to go bk to sleep, 2nd time he settled in 3 mins himself, third time 12.40 he cried and screamed until 3.30 this morning. I went in, gave him water and he lung to that water and wouldn't let go, finally falling asleep holding it - not sucking.
He is now in there for his midday and we are at it again.
His voice is hoarse from all the crying and angry screaming. What can I do?
He was sleeping 1.5 to 2 hrs between 10-12 but on advice I have pushed him to bed at 11 because waking at 12 he did struggle more in the arvo to get to 7pm bedtime. But changing him to 11 sleep he has only slept 1 hr first day nd 45 mins yesterday ( no crying when he went down though).
Struggling... What do I do?
