If you had to name the top three (or two or just one) things that worked relieve constipation, what would they be? I am dying to find a cure for my child. Doctors keep sending me home with loads of laxatives and suppositories...I want to address the root of the problem. Please share, much appreciated.

for me dairy (esp yoghurt and cheese) cause it, stonefruits (peach/plum/apricot) relieve it. getting wholegrains via bread isn't always a good idea, in fact for me going the fibre route just gives me a sore tummy. Starchy foods/complex carbs can be cause, you could consider trying a paleo-type diet with no dairy or grains, plenty of meat, veg and fruit, lots of leafy greens etc. Exercise def helps and as someone said below, allowing time to relax and do what needs to be done ;), as he may hold it out of habit, wanting to keep playing, fear of pain etc which then allows water to be reasborbed by the body and causes a problem.

it's a cordial drink made from berries, you'll find it beside all the orange squash etc. it is not the best for your teeth but as long as you are brushing well it is a good fix! if it could be slightly warmed that would be even better (mix with warm water).

And i must add, he has been on laxatives for a while now and his poo is no longer rock solid...just not regular and so a bit tricky as we have to everyday up and down the dose based on its consistency.

Thank you so much everyone for your replies (isn't it heart warming to see so many when you come back to your post? :) my son just turned three and has been constipated for two and a half years now. I remember it was immediately after he started solids and i remember cutting out rice and banana from his diet. It never occured to me it could be from formula as he only had a bottle or two of it and the rest was breast milk. I only realized it after i weaned him off BM at 15 months and he couldnt do poo for more than a week. It's been a struggle since then with switching formulas, cows milk, no formula, no dairy, limited dairy... What i dont understand is my son's diet is mainly made up of wholegrains and loads of fruits (about two to three bowls a day) and unlike typical toddlers, he loves green salads. He drinks about 800ml of fluids a day if not more. I dont know where i am going wrong when it comes to his food really. I will look into celiac disease, thank you purple. Has anyone tried homeopathy for constipation? Any more suggestions or similar experience? Thank you once again.

Activa Laban, the best thing that I can ever recommend it really works as my daughter had a constipation n nothing worked so well, just give your little one daily half or either 1/4 of the glass n you ll see the difference INSHALLAH.

If you want to address the problem, don't ask what is the cure for the constipation, you need to look into what LO eats. How old is LO? If your LO is young and on formula and just started solids, it might be formula + types of solids she/he eats. When DD started solids, she was constipated for about 3 weeks, crying with pain every time she wanted to do #2. We've changed formula from Aptamil to Aptamil comfort, stopped rice cereal, gave a lot of water and juices, fed her pear, apricots, peach and plums + gave her glycerin suppository every week. After her tummy got used to solids intake, everything came back to normal :)

Virgin coconut oil - add some to a room temp tropical juice if your LO won't take it directly. All bran with raisins - not very appetizing to kids though. Organic shop sells great bags of pitted prunes and they are great with yogurt and honey. Good luck:)

constipation could be a sign of something else being wrong. We suffered with DD from birth, she would sometimes not "go" for 10-14 days, always bloated, always in pain etc. 2 and a half years down the road we have the reason, she has Celiac disease. Not saying your child does, but if the constipation seems chronic it may be useful to look at everything else too, incase there is something else causing it. Baby massage and lots of exercise (legs) helped for us.

As a child I apparently suffered from the same. My grandmother made me what she referred to as "donkey droppings". Basically - its rum balls with (no rum), but with prunes as a main ingredient. I used to eat a few of those a day - I remember thinking it was just a special treat, I dont think I knew what they were for and I certainly would have never sat down and ate plain prunes. It worked wonders though, apparently. Laxatives etc had never worked - but I never had any problems after my regime of donkey droppings.

How old is your little one? Water, fibre (NOTHING white or processed) and exercise were the three things I had to ensure my son got plenty of.

Oh sorry just re-read this and realised it's for your little one. Coffee not such a good idea then!

I think freshly juiced mangoes work well with kids. Try making smoothies with hidden laxatives in them....

I was on opiate pain killers for many years due to chronic pain (thank god its a thing of the past now) and suffered severe constipation. I was given magnesium powder, to mix in water with citric acid (as this activates the magnesium) to use in conjunction with metamucil. it did work (was prescribed to me by a physiotherapist who specialises in bowel dysfunction). You can find her book through google "constipation, lets get things moving" by Sue Markwell. it's a little book costing about $6, you could probably get it delivered here. She also has exericises for it.

After 7 yrs of stuggling with this, my DD is finally without medicine. We had to avoid loads of food products: NO pasta (only wheat), NO apple juice at all! No carrots, no weak tea, however, she did eat BROWN bread with loads of fibres. Lots and lots of water is very important. She now starts her day with a glass of fresh orange juice, and I put her on the toilet every night at the same time (before bed) to create a habit. She still won't go anywhere else, so after a sleepover at a friend's house, it is always a bit harder as she skipped a day. But to be honest, the root of the problem wasn't food, but her being scared of going. As a very young toddler, she got constipated once and that caused her to associate going to toilet with pain. It took us nearly 7 years to get over this....been to hospital to get her an enema after 2 weeks of not pooing! She now finally understands that if she goes regularly (once every 2 days mostly) it will not hurt. But she can be on the toilet for up to 20 minutes as it still is difficult. Hope you'll find a way of dealing with this as it can be soooo disheartening.

Thanks. I have strictly been following the BRAT elimination diet for so long and will continue to do so. Will store bought apple juice do? I am quite wary of the sugar in them.

NOT: bread, rice, apple, toast. (BRAT) However, apple juice works wonders.
