My 18month old DH was on the shuttle from Edinburgh to Heathrow - choked on something and threw up all over her teddy and the poor guy in the next seat who was on his way to a job interview. I often wonder how he got on and whether he got the job! Cabin crew were great and gave me a black bag for teddy and clothes but it meant another bag to juggle all the way to KL>

4 months is a great time to fly. Just take a few changes of clothes incase they vomit or leak and make sure you get the bassinet row.

I know you are worried as everyone is when travelling for the first time, but honestly little babies are the easiest thing onboard a plane. You will look back once you have a crazy toddler and beg for the day when the worst thing they did on a plane was cry a little bit. Best advice is try not to stress (even when other passengers look at you, you'll never see them again, so who cares) and find a nice comfy baby carrier. I love the Ergo. It was a godsend when going to the bathroom or putting him to sleep. I also found non button fly pants are great, as if no one offers to hold them for you, it makes it easier to go to the bathroom. Hi I travelled with my DD when she was around that age and i remember coming to the forum asking for advice as I was worried too. Well, she slept most of the time and it was so much easier to travel with her then than now (1yr 5months), breastfeed or bottle feed when taking off and when landing, when you want to use the rest room just ask the flight attendant to watch the baby for you, they are very helpful. its so so much easier to travel with them when they are young. Carry enough clothes to change your baby when they mess up themselves. Good luck

It all depends on the 4 month old as to how the trip will go, but we never had any issues when travelling with DS when he was younger - and I did it quite a lot. Some babies don't like flying, and unfortunately the bassinets are under where all the main screens and lights are, and also often near all the traffic for toilets, or backing onto the kitchen, where there is quite a bit of noise - so if you have a sensitive/light sleeping baby - they can be a little unsettled. My biggest suggestion is to hold off on feeding them until take off and landing - if you feed them when you are doing these things, the sucking motion helps ensure they don't have any ear issues, which means they don't get ear pain - which a number of people have problems with. Otherwise, make sure you check in relatively early to guarantee your bassinet seat - believe it or not, until you are actually ticketed (even if you book it!) someone else can bump you and get your prebooked bassinet seat, which would not be ideal! Good luck .. If it makes you feel any better I am about to do a 24 hour flight with a toddler and 4.5 month old, so I am bracing myself for how that will go!!
