I'm looking for some travel tips..
We will be talking our first flight with DS at Christmas & I'm stressing out over what I need to pack/carry-on/check in. We're flying with Emirates.
We have a bugaboo chameleon stroller & I am wondering if that has to be checked in as luggage? If so, has anyone used the bugaboo transport bag?
Also, can the car seat be taken onto the plane, or should that be also packed up & checked in?
The first flight will be fine as my husband will be with me to help cart everything about, but the return flight will be different as I will be travelling alone with DS..

Any advice you can give would be greatly appreciated.

I always traveled with my bug a boo and never checked it in i always take it right to the plane door, I found it easy in Dubai to take apart and fold down as people are much more helpful, in the uk it wasn't so easy, How old is your baby? if hes in a maxi cosy seat can you not get the bug a boo clips and only take the car seat and wheels, when my little girl got to big for her maxi cosy that attaches i got my parents to buy me a car seat in the uk, which i leave there for when i go back it will last until she is 4 years old and saves me taking one home every year, Asda online sell a great 5* car seat for 35 pound. The only thing i would say about traveling with a bug a boo is make sure you get a case, emirates gave my pram back to me in London with 3 wheels and the ground staff at gatwick really didn't care, on my own that was a struggle, now my pram goes in a case every time. <em>edited by lou86 on 09/12/2012</em>

Hi Liv My tips would be: Definitely use the sling in the airports Wear easy to take off shoes (trying to take off knee high boots through security Dubai side with baby in the Ergo on my own was not easy) Make sure the bugaboo is in a proper travel case then plastic wrapped or it will get totally trashed (even consider leaving it at home and buying a cheapy just for travelling) Wrap the car seat very well - even just plastic wrapped at the airport my looked like it had been thrown around

Thanks for the replies Daza & GerMumPer :-) Lots of helpful advice there - I've got a sling, so I will take that with me. As we haven't got a seat for baby, I guess I'll just pack up the car seat and check it in, one less thing to carry. Thanks again, appreciate the tips.:)

Hi Liv When flying by myself with my children I always find it easiest to keep things simple. Taking my bugaboo with my husband was fine but if by myself I just take a cheap fold down. It's much easier to just take it to the plane door and it's down in one flick - the bugaboo needs to be taken to bits and packed in the bag which takes time and isn't much fun when you are also trying to hold a baby and/or trying to stop little ones running off. The same goes with reassembling at the plane door if you are able to get it back then at the other end. If your son is young enough and doesn't need the buggy to sleep at the airport just taking a baby carrier/sling could also be an option. With the car seat, unless you have a seat for your son and are going to use it for sleeping in on the plane then I'd say just check it in, otherwise it's just another thing to carry. I find it easiest to pack everything you need in to one easily managed and easily accessible bag. I keep it under the seat in front or take it out the locker as soon as the light goes off keep it by my feet. It's a pain having to keep on getting up (whilst holding bubs) and getting stuff out the locker. Have everything you need for a nappy change in a small bag in your carry on, saves rummaging and getting everything together when you need it. Make sure you take a change of clothes (if not two) for your son and at least an extra top for yourself - one friend had her child vomit on her as her plane took off for NZ - she didn't have a change for herself and spent the trip smelling of sick. Good luck, the thought of travelling on your own with children is normally much worse than the reality. Expect the worst, hope for the best and take what comes with a smile.

As we were flying now for the 4th time with my 6month old daughter, and last time even without my husband the most important part is your flight back without him! Try to take the pram with you into the plane- they took my pram, really big 3 pieces inside. Don't give it away as luggage, cause then you gotta carry her&maxicosi&diaper bag from the plane to the place where you'll get your luggage! Long way to Walk :(... Tell them otherwise they can carry your stuff! We had the car seat on the plane as well, they give it back to you after landing. Emirates offers strollers for the way but it's only helpful when your baby can sit ;) And smile when your baby starts to cry ;) and stay relaxed...maybe she even enjoys the flight...take off&landing baby bottle or breast feeding, and whenever you need a break, ask a stewardess to help you :)....

Hi Alowicious - thanks so much for taking the time to reply, lots of good info! We are traveling to Dublin, so the rules will be pretty much the same as UK. We're on a waiting list for the bassinet, but with it being so busy at Christmas, we may not get one. I'm sure the little man won't object to being cuddled for a few hours anyway. He's a very chilled out baby, so hopefully he will remain that way in the flights. My heart always breaks when I see a lady traveling alone with a screaming baby...hopefully that won't be me in a few weeks!! Thanks again.

Hi, Our Bug went separate to the luggage. You can take a stroller weighing no more than 10 kilos and has to be not over a certain length but all packed up our Cameleon weighed 20 kilos and was over the length and they still let us take it as extra above our luggage allowance. We also took a baby carrier on the plane and they stowed it in an overhead locker - it was a maxi-cosi cabriofix. If you use one of those umbrella strollers you can take that to the plane hatch and they will stow it for you. Dubai don't really care if you need to take water for a baby's bottle or food with you on the plane, it's worse coming back from the UK (don't know where you are going to?).My tips for travelling would be breathe! Make sure when you take off and land the baby is suckling on something bottle/nursing/dummy and you can gently massage the ears to help them pop, do that when your own ears pop. Get the bassinet whether you think you will use it or not its good to have a little break. If you feel stressed hand baby to hubby and walk! Take a padded nappy change pad as the drop down change thing in the toilets is hard and quite short. Breathe! we travelled twice with a young baby and he was really good both times, only cried when another baby did, but didn't really sleep very much. Lastly, breathe :) count to 10 before you flip lol. I always remember when I was pregnant seeing a lady travelling on her own with a baby and she was a smoker so was puffing on one of those fake fags that gives you a dose of nicotine, looking very stressed, she was cradling her baby and saying 'shut up' to her and the poor love was crying it's heart out, I nearly went over and offered help but a stewardess beat me to it. When ur on your own and you need a break just ask one of the stewardesses they are great and always happy to help. Good luck! <em>edited by alowicious_28 on 28/11/2012</em>
