Mrsb, I am being forced to leave my villa and unfortunately can't afford another place with a garden. Is there any chance that you have room for 2 more hens? My girls need a forever loving home! I hope you can help.

I have chickens and they don't seem to be bothered with the summer heat. I have a nice insulated house for them but they use it not to sit on their eggs or when it rains or sandstorms. Otherwise they sleep sitting on top. I think if you live in close quarters to westerners who are perhaps not used to the noise of a rooster, you should only keep hens although they can also make a racket if they wish to. My rooster makes a racket at all hours - he is a bit confused, poor boy. But he is handsome so we put up with his silliness. Ask your neighbours if they mind if you kept chickens and if not, go for it. Fresh eggs every day are great!!!!!! They are fun!!!!!! oooh! any chance my hens can come visit for a while, I would love some chicks but can't get a rooster.. too noisy for this area ;) Of courseYou are very welcome - perhaps I should start a stud!!!!!! My DD enjoys the babies and it is fun to see the entire process. How many fertilised eggs were you considering????? I think on average, a hen lays around 25-30 before starting to sit. oooh, lovely! I would love to have 2 or 3 chicks, because I dont think I would be able to keep more than (5 total) without having to extend chicken coup, but I know thats impossible to control, my hens can only mange to get 10 eggs under them, they are on the smaller side. (lovely local hens) How long do you think they need to be with your stud before they start laying fertile eggs? I'm excited I don't know - my two lovely hens lay daily, I think the eggs are fertilised daily (certainly the rooster is practicing continuously throughout the day), and when they finally sit, they sit for around 21 days. I think (not sure) each egg needs to be fertilised separately, ie, daily, not just once. They lay over a period of several weeks, leaving the eggs alone until they finish and then they sit.

Where did you buy your chicks from? I did not buy chicks, I rescued 2 young female chickens from someone who wasn't taking good care of them. Chicks need a lot of attention and care, if you are looking at adopting a chicken you can contact Posh Paws / Animal Sanctuary and they would be able to help you. I would strongly recommend against buying a chick! they need their mother hens :) I agree - chicks need to be very well established before leaving their mother's care. Often, when you purchase from pet shop they are already sick from being stressed and will not last long - you know those "cute little yellow ones the kids like". I originally bought mine from the animal and bird market. They are older, established and separated into male and female. Rescue would be the best way to go as long as you can be sure about the gender - males will create a big noise problem for you if you life in a residential compound. My rooster crows at all hours of the day and night!!!!! He is a gorgeous but confused boy. They are a lot of work, cleaning up, food (they eat a lot), fresh water a couple of times a day, especially when it is hot, a cool place to sleep, sit during the day and sleep at night. Also you need a good fence as they can get through tiny holes, can flutter up and get over quite a high fence, and they just love a fresh green pick so will denude your garden very quickly. The only thing my chickens don't like to nibble on are the Basil's bushes, the eucalypt trees and the Roman trees - everything else they love, including my roses!!!!! They just adore mint so don't even bother trying to grow it. I have my vege garden meshed off but they still get in sometimes and eat everything in sight. Hahaha. They "lean" against the mesh until they can get past it. They are terribly naughty and not quite as stupid as one would first imagine! Having said all t - enjoy - I just love my chooks!!!!!

Can you tell me where you bought your chicks? We're looking at getting 6 in the next few weeks.

I have 2 local hens in my garden in JVT, with plentiful shade and enough water, bushes, trees they are more than happy. I love them and nothing better than fresh eggs in the morning. and other than a bit of clucking they dont make much noise!

Is it not too hot to keep chooks in Dubai....wouldn't they end up roasting...? I doubt it. Lots of people have them here.

There are at least two roosters in the Hattan villas in the Lakes. I have seen and heard them on several occasions and I am quite grateful that I don't live closer to them. I have often wondered how the neighbours cope.

There is at least one rooster a street away from us in Meadows which makes an incredible racket early in the morning. Which in turn, sets the various dogs off around the place as well. Still ... we're used to it now. Not sure it's permitted but it's obviously something some people do.

Is it allowed? :D It's against the sub community rules in AR, The Lakes and Springs. Not sure if they enforce it though. edited by starsouthern on 10/04/2013

I do not live in Emmar properties no more but I am sure surrounded by hens, ducks, goats and other birds and animals I haven't identified yet... It used to be very disturbing but now, it's kinds soothing... I feel a more country lifestyle with all these sounds :D Hens are quiet and there is no rooster .............. When there is no rooster, one of the hens will take on the role (as much as she can).
