Hey there, we are almost there: flying on Thur for the first time with our 4months old. Thx to an EW lady's recommendation:-), Careem has been booked (as we are not travelling with our baby car seat) but I wanted to know what you are taking with you for a door to door 10hrs trip (I m breastfeeding): 5 diapers, wet napkins, a blanket, a swaddle, pacifier, 1 spare cloth set, 1 toy, the baby wrap, a cap for A/C, breastfeding cover, ... Am I forgetting a basic (or useful) thing? TIA

Depends on your baby. I travelled a lot with my first when she was small and all I ever packed was nappies, wet wipes, one blanket, 2 dummies and that was it. She never was sick and never had exploding poo or whatever so never had to change her clothes or mine nd when I travelled alone, i could not afford to be carrying so much junk that I wouldnt use. If you are both going and you can carry all that extra stuff then thats differnet It's true, totally depends on the baby I guess. Both my babies were reflux babies (hence the need for a change of clothes or two). We never had exploding poo luckily. Also since they've been breastfed I never had all the faff of bottles. When we fly its a 14 hour non stop flight, plus two 3-4 hour flights, so 20 hours of flying all up, so clearly we don't want to be sitting in puke cover clothes all that time or worried should a fever develop mid journey (although never did). 4 months is a really easy age, mine loved tummy time so I laid a blanket on the floor with a few toys and left them to it and they sleep well on the plane.

Thank you mumofmoo. I m actually pretty minimalist and my baby seems (don t dare to say "is"...one never kows! ;-) ) pretty much like your first one. I might try to travel light (even if both of us are travelling this time)-like it.

I would take more nappies, I always take one nappy for every hour of flight, which is clearly more than you need but better not to run out in case of flight delays etc. I'd also take: 2 changes of clothes for the baby and one change of top at least for you. a scarf/pashmina that can double as a nursing cover and spare blanket. A thermometer and paracetamol (in case your baby gets sick mid-flight (has never happened but again pays to be prepared) Not having to take food for the baby makes it easier. Maybe take some snacks for you. I'd take a few toys, I usually take more "novelty items" that you might find at daiso, like a little torch or light up ball, something that makes a jangly sound, a small mirror etc. And a couple of plastic bags to throw dirty clothes, blankets etc in.

When I first travelled with my 6months old, I brought the following for an 8 hr flight: Hand Carry for the plane: Disposable bib Disposable plastic bags (tiny) Disposable changer (or big plastic, white garbage bag, or changing pad you get which are sold in pharmacy -- the same ones they use in hospital to avoid blood going in your bed after giving birth) 5 Nappies Nappy cream Wipes Dummy Bottled baby food Baby spoon Bottles (I wasn't breastfeeding at that time) Milk (Full small tin) Pyjama (To make them feel the most comfortable so they will sleep nicely) Extra clothes Clothes for getting off the plane (depending on weather difference) Toy Baby Bag (Lighter for easier access when in the airport / you will have access to the basics even if you split with DH) 5 Nappies Nappy cream Wipes 2 Milk Bottles 2 Container with exact milk portion 1 Disposable nappy changer Disposable bib Baby food Spoon Toy Dummy It's most helpful to make them feel as comfortable as possible so that they will be calm and rested, hence, easier flight. I've travelled when my child's 6 months, 9 months, 1 1/2 year, with two children -- 1 year old & 3 year old (the toughest of all). My next travel would be with 3 kids, all 4 year old and less! Can't wait! What I learned from all those travel is that you cannot rely on places to have what you need (I.e. a changing table or tiny spoon) and even if airline staff are able to give you your request, it usually takes time -- and time is essential when having a child who could scream the place down. Usually when they start getting agitated, it takes a lot of time and comforting to put the situation back to normal. It helps a lot to anticipate what your child/children need as it keeps the situation nice and calm. Enjoy your flight.

Agree with whereintheworld and would also take several muslins, including a large one. I have seen people make a tent over the bassinet with a large muslin, you would need to take duct/gaffer tape too. Take more than one pacifier and also a pacifier clip as at 4 months the baby can throw it!! edited by tamieg1 on 28/04/2014

Best of luck.. it shouldn't be a hassle.. i flew with my 6 month old and it was such a beautiful experience.. slept through the whole thing.. i'm dreading the 14 hours flight with a 23 month old though.. eeeek!!! you got things covered but i would take 2 spare clothes instead of 1.. as you never know what could happen. i took 2 with me and i sure was glad i did.. had to change her in the DXB airport before travelling then at the destination airport since she had 2 accidents..
