Hi Ladies,
I am currently in my second trimester of pregnancy with first baby and trying to explore all options for labor and delivery. Does anyone have recent personal experience with hypnobirthing in Dubai? Did you feel sufficiently prepared? Did it "work" for you? Would you do it again?
I always thought I would just go straight for epidural but now that I am pregnant and reevaluating everything, I am becoming really interested in natural birth. Can anyone share their experiences or recommendations for hypnobirth resources/classes in Dubai? Much appreciated!

I had done hyno birthing with Simone Burke and I highly recommend it ! I was the most paranoid person about hospitals, labour, needle and blood before this course ! The confidence and knowledge I gained from this course was immense. Hypno birthing is not something hippy or whacky ! To me it is just clearing the misunderstanding about labour and hospitals. It is going back to the evolution where labour used to be calm. One of the most important knowledge I gained from this course about our human body that is we have 2 nervous system – sympathetic nervous system which releases fear and parasympathetic which releases confidence. Both will not work simultaneously. Labour is very much overhyped by hospitals and many already moms that we go to labour with fear. This explains why many ladies say the pain was uncontrollable and loosing ones own mind. Hypno birthing may or may not decrease pain but it makes you bold, fearless and calm which was excellent. My doctor and midwife was really shocked by how calm I was in labour and said this is not how a first time mum is.

Wanted to note for the ladies interested in Hypnobirthing, following the Marie Mongan method, who are planning to do self study - the books are not always easy to find here, or at least that was my experience when I started looking earlier this summer, but I saw that Kinokuniya at Dubai Mall just received a big shipment (I was there on Sunday) of the official book with CD.

JJBAUS - Thanks for the Zen review, disappointed to hear that. Glad you mentioned it though, as I was thinking of asking for their next class. Sorry you wasted an afternoon :(

Hi, Hanfanuk - agree that its imperative to keep an open mind. I know hypnobirthing courses dont tell you all the other stuff as they want to avoid filling ypthe mind with negativity, but if you get put into a sitation, you need to know how to deal with it. On the course at Zen - you missed NOTHING you cant gain from flipping through an active birthing book, and reading the first 50 odd pages of the hypnobirthing book. Im so annoyed I wasted not only my afternoon off, but my husbands. The workshop had the potential to be good, but both instructors were difficult to hear and understand, and did not have a clear path kaid out for what messages they were trying to convey. I knew it would be bad within the first 15 mins, it didnt disappoint.

hello, just wanted to say that it is nice to read some frank and measured comments from people who have experienced hypnobirthing. I agree with Bella and Roisin, I was adamant that I would have a natural water birth (in UK) using hypnobirthing and did a course and an NCT course, however in hindsight, I feel quite strongly that neither prepared me properly for what was in store (for example, neither course mentioned tearing, stitches or post birth surgery - which I know now are common) and I wish I had listened a little more to other people's experiences. I won't go into the gory details but having refused all pain relief on the day, I am still dealing with the post birth issues (18 months later) and would urge people to be open minded about what is on offer and just see how they feel on the day (it's true what the midwives say, no one gets a medal for a drug free birth). Hope this isn't too negative, and really good luck ladies!

Morning, I tried hypnobirthing and found it reassuring, and I enjoyed the relaxation techniques in the later stages of pregnancy. Like bella my labour came really suddenly and progressed really fast so I'd no time to use any of the method. I recommend researching it and the classes are good for meeting other ladies but stay open minded as everyone's experience is different. If you feel you need an epi on the day go for it as you need to feel calm and secure to enjoy how amazing childbirth is.

Hi Divinebeet, Zen Yoga is holding a prenatal yoga class combined with intro to hypnobirthing next Friday 15 August. Its very affordable and for you and hubby to attend, so that might help you make your decision. All the best! Thanks! I tried to find more information on their website, but don't see any mention of it. Would you know where I can learn more about the class or at least which Zen Yoga location this would be?

I did Hypnobirthing (Katherine Greaves method) and at the time I was super positive, read every book going, it was all going to be natural and I would stay at home in the bath as long as possible etc. I did the course, listened to my CDs, guilted hubby into practicing the relaxation techniques with me, but to be honest it did not help me at all, and I have a high pain threshold anyway. I think it led me into a false sense of security that it was entirely possible for it to not be painful if I breathed through it etc, so when the contractions started getting intense I just went into shock , it was so bad I was vomiting constantly from the intensity of the pain! I don't think it helped that i wanted a water birth so being in a bath for the early parts was the next best thing, but unfortunately that didn't happen as I had to be induced, thankfully then propess worked so I didn't need any further induction methods and my labour was very quick (3 hours from contractions starting to delivery) but I'm sure that made it all the more intense. Hubby was trying to calm me down and do the breathing and relaxation but it just did nothing for me and I was climbing the walls, lol. I did end up having a natural delivery but only because there was no time to give me anything as I went from 5-10 cms in 20 minutes, I was desperate for anything, but they couldn't give me until I'd been monitored 20 minutes and by then it was too late she was on her way. I've heard lots of positive things about hypnobirthing but unfortunately it wasn't for me so hope you have a better experience :)

Hi Divine Beet, Ive been looking into hypnobirthing for some time now, and another contact is Deborah Williams. She is more expensive, but does her sessions privately. What I liked most is that she is a midwife by profession, and will come to you. In my emails with her, she also said there was no need to do the antenatal classes as it is already included, so you can save on that additional cost. Unfortunately though, she too is away until end of August. As my husband is away first week of September, Im not sure if I want to cram it in over 3 weeks, or if I should do the sessions with my Doula in Australia, as she is also a hypnobirthing therapist. Best of luck to you in finding your classes! My doula in Australia as a extensive track record in natural births, so it clearly must work for alot of people. Hope the above helps!

Hi DivineBeet, I used Jasmine for my hypnobirthing classes... It's unfortunate that she is unable but there are others who do it too like Elizabeth Bains. Might be worth checking out.... I highly recommend it and even though my labour was long and complicated I managed to stay focused get through the whole birth without any pain relief and gas and air. I found my LO was alert and I had immediate connection with him especially when breast feeding... I will most definitely use all the hypnobirthing techniques for my second birth without a question of a doubt. Above all, I felt empowered to have a achieved a natural birth and to have complete control of my own body... Also I think I started my classes as late as 32 weeks, it meant I could concentrate and focus all the techniques taught in a short space of time, so don't feel pressured to have the classes done so early on too! I forgot to add we used the Marie Mongan method, I know they sell the book in that huge book store in Dubai Mall... Hope that helps! Good luck :) edited by Kookee on 08/07/2014

Thanks AHS - Unfortunately Jasmine Collin is away for the summer so next classes do not start until Autumn and I was hoping to get an earlier start. (The second link you included is an error link for me). I did pick up the Hypnobirthing book which I am getting ready to start, but was wondering if anyone would share personal experiences.
