A friend will have her visa cancelled next month but won't be leaving for a few more months.

She has a UAE driving licence, is she legal to still drive her own car on it once her visa has been cancelled? I'm thinking no....

SD, for any visa related issues, I would check with AMER services (residency and foreigner affairs) 8005111. Might be worth your friend asking them what happens to her DL and car insurance once the resident visa has been cancelled--or at least they can point her in the right direction. Alternatively, your friend can hire a car if she has an active driver's license from her home country. I don't think some things automatically work in reverse. Bank accounts for instance--I know plenty of people who have kept old salary transfer accounts and didn't have a resident visa.

You do not lose your driving skills with your visa. Your license will be still valid and accepted after visa cancellation.

Best bet is to call the police at the traffic department and ask! I was told my father could drive my car whilst he visited. He is no longer a UAE resident, but still holds a UAE drivers license and the police said that was ok. So go figure. My husband also drove on his UAE license after his visa was cancelled with no issues.

If you are on a tourist visa you can drive legally with a British driving license I recently found out, but once you become a resident you must convert that into a UAE license, you just need to take an eye test and have your UK license and passport with 2 copies of each :)

@ CouchPotato - that's what I thought so I was more than happy for DH to do the driving until my new visa came through. Don't think he enjoyed the trips to the supermarket very much though ?

I had to do a visa run between expiry of one visa and issuance of another back in 2011 and was told by our insurers that I shouldn't drive on my UAE driving licence as it wasn't valid and that I was also not insured. If I wanted/needed to drive I should hire a car and use my UK licence or IDP. Thankfully it wasn't necessary as we are retired and DH had his new visa already so I got to be chauffeured around for just over a month ??. However I was also told that as soon as I got my new visa my UAE driving licence would automatically become valid again.

I thought the opposite, as your driving licence, once issued is not linked to your visa. There was an article in the news recently saying there was a proposal put forward to link the licences of taxi and truck drivers to their visa, hence the reason I assumed that your licence remained valid. (Insurance asks for a valid UAE driving licence, not a valid UAE visa) Driving before your visa is issued is different, as you cant have a driving licence issued until your visa is sorted.

I'm agreeing with you as you can only drive a hire car before you get your visa, so I'm assuming it works the same in reverse.
