Have you ever taken a holiday with a child and thought "Wow. That worked out brilliantly for everyone"???
If so, I really need to know about it.
We are a 1-child family (she's 7) and my 80 year old mum is here visiting and we're trying to figure out where to go for the holiday at the end of March / beginning of April.
Ideally something that doesn't break the bank and isn't too long a flight.
We're not interested in a beach resort ... we can do that around here.
We did Sri Lanka last year but that was a mistake as there's so much internal travel required if you really want to see anything. And both the child and the grandma were sick to death of the long car trips.
I was thinking London because it's been YEARS and my mum and I would both love to go and I figured, there's enough on offer to entertain a child but hubby nixed that idea. Just didn't feel like it.
Then we thought of a safari as something that would entertain all of us and would also allow for some time to relax. But I don't know where to start!! There are SO many. Hubby is quite happy to do it no a low budget but that would NOT work for my mum and frankly, not me either. But the ones I would really like to do are in Kenya and are stupidly expensive.
I was told that there are some lesser known ones in Tanzania that are just as excellent but not so pricey.
Can anyone out there recommend some "well kept secret" type safari?
Also willing to hear of ANY other non safari suggestions in any other country... As well as recommendations for any brilliant and very patient travel agents!!
Thanks so much!!

I'm from Hungary and I can recommend Budapest. Beautiful city, there are parks for your child, very good public transportation so you don't need to walk too much and it is very cheap! There is direct flight with EK. You can also travel to Vienna by train and then maybe fly back from there (again EK direct). So you did 2 cities at one trip. in March it won't be freezing anymore...

Perhaps Africa Connection in Dubai can help?

Hi m_king I highly recommend Zanzibar. My husband and I were there end of November. You will have to take Malaria tablets two days before going to on to your destination and I think it's five days of the tablets upon your return. Yellow Fever vaccination is debatable but we went with it and now we have it, it's for life. We flew with FlyDubai. Around 5.5 hours to Dar-Es-Salaam, stopped for an hour to clean up the flight for the return then off we flew again and landed on the island in about 15=20 minutes. We chose Nungwi beach which is north of the island, beautiful beaches. Stayed at Hideaway Resort and Spa and chose an all-inclusive as we didn't feel like going anywhere. For me, it was the meals rather than the drinks that were important, for my husband, he likes to have his drinks. Lots of beach activities. If you chose the all-inclusive, you get a butler who will get your drinks for you even at the beach or wherever you are outside. But then there are lots of other great places to stay too over at Nungwi. In fact all other places in Zanzibar is very good. x

I get the impression that Prague is quite a small walkable city We booked tickets to the Black light theatre that seems suitable for older children at least. We are quite happy just exploring old architecture and chill on our breaks, so I'm not sure they have much targeted towards a 7 year old like they would have in London for example. We were looking to book a medieval show as well, but was put off by reviews on TripAdvisor that they aloud smoking in there. It's somewhere I have been thinking to visit for quite some time now and our children are a bit older, so appreciate just seeing a new city or country.

Thank you all so much for your replies. Zanzibar does seem on the top ten list of late and I'd have loved to do it. But I checked and it seems end of March would not be a wise time to visit. One of the hotter, more humid times to visit and I don't do so well in hot/humid (says the woman who's spent the better part of her life in the UAE!!! But still, that is sadly the case. Cold I can handle and I'd LOVE to do London but hubby doesn't want to. Jordan is lovely but we've done it more than once. Now Prague... THAT sounds interesting. Is it enjoyable for a 7 year old? I' just afraid that it';s more the sort of place where you're on your feet all day long exploring the architecture and stuff like that and that would bore the little one and perhaps be too much walking for my mum??

We have recently been to Zanzibar and I reviewed it for Oasis magazine. See below the link to my article: http://www.zahragarden.com/2016/07/05/hakuna-matata-in-zanzibar-2/ I would be more than happy to send you details of our driver, the owners of the villas etc. and any other useful information if case you end up going. It's been certainly one of the most memorable vacations we have ever experienced. The only down side I can think of is having to take malaria tablets, but we survived it and we would certainly do it again.

How about Jordan - a short flight away, lovely cheap resorts by the dead sea, fascinating petra in the South, tonnes of organised camping opportunities in Wadi Rum.......shopping and all the usual stuff in the capital Amman. You can pick up flights for AED 1k via Emirates right now

What about Zanzibar? I haven't been myself, but it seems very popular at the moment and Fly Dubai is flying there. Or maybe Prague? We have booked it later this year and it seems like a lot to see and well priced hotels.
