Could have started viral and now gone bacterial.

Sounds like a viral infection. I remember my son being like tha; alternating between nurofen and calpol, not eating and temperatures lasting three days. I had to set the alarm clock in the night to check his temp and wake him to give him some medicine. Check the back of his throat for signs of white spots. Also check for mouth ulcers as this is common with viral and hand foot and mouth. Does he have his back teeth? Hope he feels better soon and good luck at the docs :(

Fever reached a high of 39.6 last night so he had a voltarol suppository but 5 hours later the fever was back up. This morning his fever was 39.4 and I managed to get calpol into him but only because I threatened him with another suppository. Still not eating, just drinking milk and water. Waiting for doc to open

Just to add when my nephew had Scarlett fever, he didn't get the red cheeks initially, started with a sore throat, then fever, then started vomiting, the time frame for that was about 12 hours.....

Freckles you should take him to the dr's. My son has had Scarlett fever twice ( it is caused by the strep bacteria), both times in the couple of days before I have had him to the doctor, they have looked at his throat, not seen anything and said oh it's viral.....only to have him come down with a raging fever and bright red cheeks ( Scarlett fever).....they can also start vomiting with it as the toxins from the bugs build up in the blood stream. I know my DS no matter what his fever does not get lethargic unless e is really sick.... Better t be safe than sorry.

I had something that sounds similar about a month ago. I had a really high fever for 4 days but no cough, ear, throat, etc, just slept a lot (fortunately I got it over the weekend!). When the fever dropped I looked like I'd had a tanning accident, I was glowing with a pink rash from head to foot. I went to the doctor and, despite all sorts of test, the best guess was that it was an odd adult reaction to something like slapped cheek - she did a strep test which was negative. It took me a good week to get back to full strength once the fever cleared. Hope your wee one's feeling better soon.

I know of a handful of children who have all been sick with Scarlet Fever over the last few weeks. Heard of another case today as well. Seems to be doing the rounds pretty intensely lately. It's just one nasty virus after the other.... :-( SH

OP it sounds like ear infection, probably need anti biotics. My LO has the same symptoms and loads of it at his nursery. I'm taking mine to docs in morn, lets hope calpol will get him through the night!

from what I learned is that it is a flu virus that is going around, nothing more than the regular flu for most but for some reason turned into pneumonia for my son. If you do take him to the doctor have them test for strep (scarlet fever) and the flu instead of just going with the looks like scarlet fever like the first doctor told me!

My son had the same exact thing 2 weeks ago, drinking tons of water, eating hardly anything, on the couch all day (he usually can’t sit for 2 minutes) with a high fever for days. I took him to one doctor who said it was scarlet fever and gave him an antibiotic and an herbal cough syrup. Two days later with no improvement I took him to another doctor who did an x-ray and found that he had pneumonia and was given a new antibiotic which cleared him up. He was out of school for a week and a half. Older son just had the fever for a day but had a friend who was out of school the same time as my little one with pneumonia also. omg really??? He doesn't have a cough or anything though and no runny nose or cold symptoms. Mind you this only started yesterday so it could be too early for full symptoms. I did wonder about scarlet fever actually.

Sounds like a virus as my 20 month old son had the same symptoms last week...started with fever and a runny nose and that lasted for a day followed by 3 days of diarrhoea and sickness. Not good. Went to doc and poo test confirmed that it was a viral issue. Same here. Must be a nasty viral bug going around. Little one also started with a fever and runny nose. Fever went on for 3-4 days, alternated with calpol and suppositores. Doctor did a throat swab test to check if it's a bacterial infection, test came negative so it's definitely a viral bug. Not much you can do with a viral infection but to try to keep the fever down. Seems like it's not only going around with the little kids. Lots of people at work sick with the same thing it seems. Hope your little one gets better soon!

I just posted about our on going battle with DS this month. He had ear and throat infections. Went away and this morning slight fever again. I debating pulling him out of nursery next term instead of paying for him to stay at home. We are in the same situation. Paying for our son to get constantly sick! :\:

thanks all. I have been trying to alternate the calpol and the nurofen but the little so and so just won't take the orange medicine...he'll only have the pink one! I have some voltaren suppositories 12.5 mg so I might use one tonight if his fever spikes again. He is very red faced but no rash anywhere. He won't even eat a bit of choclate which is rather worrying!

How old is your child? Fevers will make them lethargic. BUT, take him to the doctors and ease your mind if anything else. Most of the time I know it is probably just a cold/virus with mine but, after a few days of fever, I take them anyway to be sure.

oh one thing. Apparently asking a LO if their ears or throat hurts doesn't work as mine didn't let us know and they were really infected. Why can kids handle that pain but cry ****** murder when they trip.

my daughter has been going thru something similar - she is 21 mths. developed fever last morning for no apparent reason. very lethargic like u say - no cold, no ear ache, tummy fine. gave her calpol and that brought the fever down. but it was back to 39.2 F last evening, so on doc recommen we gave her a VOLTAREN suppository last night. that has brought the fever down - tho it was stil 38F this mornin. gave her calpol again, n since then she s back to her normal self. lets hope she stays that way. fingers crossed. so i would think if ur doc can be contacted on the phone, then perhaps have a word, maybe a more effective remedy will work. hope he gets better soon.

Just never ending Sals His temp was 39.1 last night and today it has gone between 37 and 39 depending on whether he has just had the calpol or not. He just seems so lethargic and doesn't want to play, eat or do anything There are always so many bugs here, a friend works in a nursery and she forever ill since she started work!!!! Management have no pity on the staff too.

Frecks. Sometimes Calpol alone will not control the high temperature. What's worked for DD in the past, as guided by the doctor, is to alternate between Ibuprofen and Calpol, and sponging with lukewarm water, and keep monitoring the temperature. I assume you have one of those ear temperature probe things.
