Little Freckles has a high fever (2 days now) very lethargic, sleepy, not eating but he is drinking water and milk.

His throat doesn't look red and he isn't complaining about his ears or tummy, bit flummoxed actually

Been giving him calpol and just managed to force him to take some baby nurofen. Don't feel the need ot rush to the doc yet but if his fever is up again tomorrow I think I may have to.

we took our DS to the dr again (third time within a month if you count the hospital). Apparently no ear or throat infections this time. Some white spots in the throat and put on Augmentin again. That stuff is vial. Looks and smells gross and apparently to DS tastes gross too. Its a fight for him to take it and keep it down without getting sick. So hoping it works this time but really what can any of us do to help these viral infections ans why are they lasting so long? DS never got more than a stuffy nose before this.

I feel like your LOs are always sick :(. How awful for the kids and you. Hope they feel better soon. (Side note, maybe Fifths Disease or Hand Food Mouth? I think both can be pretty common for young school-age children).

spots appear to be fading but I have just noticed huge lumps on the side of his neck and back of his head where his glands are. Hadn't noticed them before so no idea how long they have been up. I feel like the worst mother in the world. Doc appt booked for 1.20 The lumps are just his glands up fighting infection, very normal, hope you get somewhere with the doc today, kids get sick you're doing everything right, don't beat yourself up.

Oh Freckles. Poor little guy. Hope you get more answers at the Dr. I second the call to go for antibiotics after fevers lasting this long. His little body should be able to fight off most minor viral things in two or three days. This is just going on for too long. Get better little one. x

Could just be a viral rash or from sweathing..only about 4 or 5 little spots. will hang fire till lunchtime after school lick up as want to make sure other child is safely being looked after Ooooh sounds like the dreaded chicken pox. when you are out get some Fenestil syrup it was amazing when my 2 had chicken pox - took the itch out straight away and then get the good old calamine lotion. I kept it in the fridge so it was lovely and cold on their spots when they all came out - we breezed through chicken pox but the lead up was not great.

Chicken pox? everything would tie in with that. Get back down to the doctors today, if it was one of mine i'd probably stick on some antibiotics by now. I wouldn't be going to hospital but would be seeing a good GP with a bit of nouse, have you got a good one? yep have a very good paed..Dr Hamzeh at Meadows clinic. Wil call him and see what he says. He seems ok in himself right now and temp down but that is the calpol. In a funny way I want to wait until his temp goes up again before I take him so they can actually see what he is like..does that make sense? Or do I sound like total loony? No because you can give him the details of the temps and other symptoms, no need to wait. After a week of temps in this country one shouldn't be ruling out trying a course of antibiotics. The fact his temp is fluctuating suggests his little body is trying to fight something, there's just so many nasties here. edited by Sticky Wicket on 15/03/2011

One essential item in our house is Manuka Honey (kind of Elizabeth Arden 8 h cream)good for everything ,outside and inside. It has natural antibiotics propriety's [b'>It doesn't have antibiotics it has anti bacterial qualities basically because honey is so sweet bacteria struggle to survive in it, any honey will do, been used for centuries in wound dressings. edited by Sticky Wicket on 15/03/2011

well he has just had a quarter of a piece of toast after calpol but is refusing to eat anymore. The calpol perks him up for a bit and he plays (right now he is sweeping) but as soon as it wears off the temp rises again and he is back on the sofa. Think you might be right janesul

Even if it's for peace of mind, take him to hospital. Better to be safe than sorry. Let me know if you need anything or any help.

Oh love for your peace of mind do you think you should take him to A&E today??? There might have been something that the docs have missed and as you say if they can get an IV going with some fluids, he'll start to feel a whole load better pretty much straight away. Poor little man, and poor you.

Is he drinking? Maybe they can investigate further. I dont know really - just trying to be helpful :) thanks love. Yes he is drinking which is about the only good thing. He vomited twice last night but nothing actually came up except a tiny bit of water. Pretty sure its not rota virus as he would be pooping and retching all the time and not drinking. Also he has had the rota immunisation. At wits end. If he is like this again tomorrow I think I will just take him straight to the hospital where at least they could put him on a drip to get some nourishment into him.

Hugs. Get him down to the Dr again. but if its a virus what can the doctor actually do? He has tested for strep and urine infection and all negative. Just worried about the fact that the fever is not breaking and he just won't eat.

Pretty bad night with little one. Temp 39.4 again this morning. The last time he actually ate was Friday. Getting worried now.

Doc said it was viral. He did a swab test for strep which was negative and then we eventually got a wee sample (after a lot of patience!) and he is negative for a urine infection. Ears and chest clear. Throat a llittle red. Fever still high and he's sleeping on the sofa. Still not eating.

Could have started viral and now gone bacterial.which usually happens with viruses here, they hold on for so long that they become bacterial. At the beginning a DR may advise against antibiotics, but that needs to be reassessed a week later.
