Hello all!
Last weekend in Ras Al Khaimah i'll remember for the rest of my life))) as i was stung by a stingray! That was the worst pain ever!!!! The good thing that i was stung in my lower leg, not my chest or stomach, as that could be fatal! So thank God!!! SO, since a lifeguards are completely helpless in this country, and im talking about 5* hotel "lifeguards'', then we must take care of our own selfs! In my case i was suffering from extreme pain in my whole leg for about 4 hours, and thats is after i spent a couple of hours in a hospital and had a few strong pain killers....
Here i would like to share with all of you some info regarding this matter, as this can happen to anyone! So from my own experience i thought, it's necessary to have the knowledge of how to avoid being sting or how to provide first aid in such a situations.

How to Avoid being Stung

Ask a lifeguard or crusty ol’ local if there are any stingrays that frequent the area. Some beaches don’t have any rays, while others are breeding grounds for these cartilaginous fishes. Lifeguards and most beach regulars should know the local environment pretty well and, if need be, can guide you to the best place to take a dip.

For areas that do have rays, look out for warmer water and smaller surf. When the water temps are pleasant and surf is flat, stingrays start to settle closer to the shore and are more prone to being stepped on. So if your beach looks like a lake and feels like a bath remember to shuffle your feet and not to stomp around clumsily in the surf. If you do the “Stingray Shuffle,” then the little sea creatures will feel the vibrations in the sand and should swim away and leave you unscathed.

Besides that luck plays a big role in being stung, so if stingrays give you the spooks make sure to bring your rabbit’s foot and lucky horseshoe with you next time you head out to the beach!

Thank God that you are ok!
Stingrays are a type of cartilaginous fish found in oceans worldwide. They have flattened bodies with long, whip-like tails and venomous stingers. Stingrays use their electric sense to locate prey and bury themselves in the sand. They are known for their graceful swimming and can be encountered in various marine environments

Which beaches here in Dubai and up in RAK should one avoid because of stingrays? You can find them on any beach. Ditto sea snakes and stonefish. The stonefish is one of the most dangerous fish in the world; its venom is excruciatingly painful and has caused fatalities. DH saw one while snorkelling at Snoopy Island a few years ago. As with just about all venomous sea creatures they are not aggressive and will only sting if you tread on them or pick them up.

I'm glad it wasn't worse for you and hope you're recovered now. Our beach is on a lagoon and I've taken photos of stingrays a metre across basking just a metre or so from the water's edge. second that...few days ago I shuffled trough the edge of the water, and stingray came out right under the sand..inches from the shore..luckily it went the opposite direction.. AGAIN let me stress that they ARE NOT AGGRESSIVE!!! PLEASE do not think they are out to attack you! Shuffle your feet across the sand and yes...keep a look out for them. Marina86, I hope you get some pain relief soon!! I sympathise. I stood on something last year in Scotland. It was the most agonising experience I've ever had..way worse than child birth. It lasted for days and even weeks later my foot was still really painful. I spoke to loads of different people and several different uni professors etc (my brother had a vested interest as he runs a water sport business where it happened so he wanted to get to the bottom of things and contacted many different professors etc). The only consensus was that contrary to what first Aid tends to suggest in incidents it is best to apply HOT water to the injured area. They all said this needed to be done immediately but I did get slight relief for daysafter if I immersed it in hot water.

Yes, hope you're feeling better now. My husband was stung down at DOSC about 15 years ago and no one knew how to treat it - the clinic that we initially took him to gave him pethodine/cold packs and tried a zillion other things but he was still in agony. Finally we rushed him to American Hospital where a great Dr immediately dunked his foot in a bucket hottish water...instant relief! They did xrays etc. Dr at American Hospital recommended a book called "All Stings Considered" - we purchased and donated it to the first clinic we attended for treatment of future patients who may be unfortunate enough to have this happen.

If you feel dizzy or nausea better go to the doctor now! St in a very hot bath might also help to ease the pain....but yes it sound like allergic reaction or infection. Hope you feel better soon!!!

Sorry to hear you got stung and YES go back to the Dr as you might be having an allergic reaction to the venom (like the link says)! Great job on the links!! I fed and held wild Stingrays in Grand Cayman for years when I worked there, never got stung....but was swimming with them, not walking where they might be sleeping. Is always a good idea to shuffle in the water anyway as there are alot of other things that you can step on or disturb that may hurt. As for being afraid of them...they are very passive and will only sting when they feel their lives are in danger. When they sting, it leaves them defenceless until their stinger grows back, so it is not an aggressive response.....only life defending. Hope it gets better.....and you're one tough girl, as I've seen grown men who have been stung cry like babies!

Did the doc gave anti bio?? You need that, and did they check if the small pieces of tall are out? Better go to a hospital here to get it checked out? Will go tomorrow to see a doctor, as i can't stand on my leg now at all. In the emergency they gave me 3 injections; one pain killer voltaren and the other anti-inflammatory, and another strong pain killer Tromal i guess, as voltaren couldn't help me. And yes, they also did X-ray,so there was nothing been found. But now its swelling and paining!
