Nimonemo, maybe it's peanuts for you but not for everybody and anyway it's up to you to decide what you want to give and what you want to keep. I always leave a tip but when a person decides to het himself/herself the tip, I ask for the change and then I don't leave a tip. edited by KB75 on 11/04/2011

It's a major pet peeve of mine too! I've heard of laborers that became millionaires (in the US) because they collected their pennies - over the years, it added up. I'm trying to teach my children not to throw money around - even little money - because it adds up. I think we should start a "give me my change" campaign!

It does not bother me at all. I think there are much more important things. Actually I usually leave the change (AED5-10-20) to the "nicest"person is attending me.... I do not understand your post, even if as you say "over the years adds up quite a large amount" I am sure the guy in the florist shop need it more than me. I think you are missing the point. It is called stealing and it should be left up to the individual person whether they want to leave people a tip or not

Maybe, he needs it more than you, and if you're ok with that, good. But maybe others prefer decide themselves if they want to leave a tip or not. Come on, ladies, we are talking about peanuts!

Never seen small change in Dubai, however the super supermarket Abela in Etihad Plaza always gives you every single fil back - I've started doing all my shopping there on the way back from work!

The point is, if they're short changing every customer, over a period of time, that adds up to a heck of a lot of money which they get for nothing!

Just wondering if anyone has actually ever SEEN 5, 10 or 20, fil coins? I haven't! The smallest I've ever seen is 25 fils. Yes they are very small same colour as a UK 1p. This was a few years ago when we first arrived though, not seen any recently.
