Do you dispose of your cosmetics regularly?

With all the recent threads asking for cosmetics advice it got me wondering how many of us are disciplined in disposing of our make up according to expiry dates. I know I am not, but going to change that now as I know some of my make up is so, so old. It is that time of year after all, out with the old and in with the new. I sense some make up shopping on the horizon. :)

Cosmetics have preservatives in them and expiry dates have a very wide safety margin to protect the manufacturer. Any bacteria transfered from your hands to the cream probably would not survive well in the cream as bacteria need to eat. Plus if they are your own bacteria and you don't share the products with anyone else, that's ok. Everything is covered with bacteria most of them good! Really how many times do we get infections relative to the constant exposure to bacteria. The fact that we do not get too many infections from old make up actually shows just how heavily laden with chemical preservatives they are, along with all the other chemicals that go into them.

I previously didn´t pay much attention to this but some things actually start to smell like they're off so I figure when they do that is really the time to get rid of them - this is especially the case for face creams and foundations I think.

It is a bit of a quandary for me because I know I should dispose of it but I also hate waste, funnily enough I have no problem throwing out stuff I no longer use but grudge getting rid of the make up, lol. :)

i do regularly, every 6 months(but i tend to be a*** retentive every 6 months anyways and clear up all the house of unused stuff)..I really had bad habits keeping things around for long periods of time when I was younger, and did end up with the few eye infections and skin conditions... but even more since moving to Dubai...i found most of my makeup in the first year over here went "bad" very quickly...i believe due to the heath. mascara gets thrown out exactly to the date... most European cosmetics...not sure of others, for last couple years (i think it was a law passed by EU commission) has to have a indication when to throw out from opening the product... edited by Goose on 09/01/2011 You're right about the Law, everything you buy now has ex dates, incl bath & shower products.

I chuck out eye pencils and mascara fairly regularly (although dont use much to begin with!), but the rest still lurks in the bag :D ETA - I chuck the eye stuff out regularly cause I used to wear contacts, and then had laser surgery, so am very aware of eye infections etc, otherwise Id probably be keeping those until finished as well!!!... edited by wikkid on 09/01/2011

Basically the reason being is once the products are opened and exposed to the air, bacteria can start to set in causing infections. I think eye makeup is more likely to be worse then foundations and lipsticks but in my opinion i don't share my make up with anyone so i don't take any notice. The only time i threw my pencils and mascara out was when i had conjunctavitas as i kept re-infecting according to the gp. every time you dip your finger in any of the jars and tubes you pass bacteria from your hands to the contents inside.

I threw my foundation out recently. I'd bought it when I was still living in the UK LOL! That is when I bought mine too, lol. Really thinking it has darkened now. My DD commented last week that the colour didn't seem to be the right shade for me and I think that is why. :(

I didn't even know until very recently make-up had expiry dates! I only ever through stuff out when it's finished. I got eye shadows, pencil and lipsticks I've had for many years. I've never had any problems, I think it's all a ploy to worry women and get them to spend more money.

I think its like food, a good excuse for them to get us to buy more, more often!! I never stick to the dates, just throw it out if it feels 'off'!

I only recently found out that the numbers on the packaging were expiry dates :\: I wear make up so infrequently, and have so little, if I was to follow these dates I would never have any!!! edited by Maid Marion on 09/01/2011

Nothing to feel guilty about, I don't dispose them and to be honest I don't even look at the expiry date since the person who did my make up for my wedding (10 years back) laughed at my face when I asked him the same question!!! :\:

I have never had any problems (so far) but in particular some of my lipsticks I have had for years and years, I feel guilty when I use them, knowing I should throw them out. Really, cosmetics manufacturers should make their products in smaller sizes and then we wouldn't feel we had to hold onto them for longer.

I am guilty of not throwing stuff out too often, but I hardly ever wear makeup tbh...I have never had an eye infection or developed a rash either....
