Last night my mother was flying back home. We walked with her to reach the boarding gate. One man from the security asked me to take off my watch, i walked through the "scan gate" and he asked me to take off my belt. The watch and the belt were in 2 different boxes.
I walked through the gate, and took back my watch from the box, my belt in the second box never arrived... At that time my husband and my mother were at the boarding gate. I asked the man from the security to help me, he became really agressive and rude and did not care at all. This last for at least 10 minutes, nobody paid attention to me. Finally, my husband came and asked where to go to make a report at the police. The man from the security became very polite and told us that "really, you really want to go to the police for a belt"...Suddenly a man arrived from nowhere and gave me back my belt without saying a word to me....strange...

hard to believe! plus i do not think there are any scanners at the gate at dubai airport. you just go through once after passport controll, the finish halas no more scanning. Reason why i love T3 no scanning, T1 for sure they scan you before check in.

I would imagine there is a simple explanation to this. Belts that have been curled up to put in a tray tend to have a life of their own and there was nothing else in the tray to hold it down. Light items that protrude over the edge of the tray can get dragged out and stay in the sides of the screening machine. The tray comes out empty and the police have to retreive the item from inside. I have had this happen with a cardigan. The screening machines at the entrance of the terminal are large ones for suitcases and it would be very easy for a light item in a tray to get tipped up. edited by frampton on 08/01/2011

I always stick everything in my handbag..... and as i wear hijab, if they ask me to take my belt off here, it's always in the side room.....

Thanks OP - its a bit of a wakeup call. what I mean is that, how often do we get to that scanner thing, dump all the stuff out our pockets etc into that bowl thing and walk through without waiting to see the bowl actually go into that machine. anyone could lift something out of the bowl without you seeing and, chances are, on the other side you just grab whatever is in the bowl and stuff it back in your pockets to get out of the way of the next people coming through... Im not necessarily talking about Dubai here, its quite possible anywhere really...

I think that's where the confusion is, Breteuil. In your earlier posts you mentioned that you went to the boarding gate. This is past security and immigration - where people actually get on the planes. I assume you actually meant check-in and not boarding gate?

Maybe they were just checking the belt out, France is one of the countries on high alert *at the moment*

Just for info, the scan is for the luggages is at the entrance of the airport, just before the check in. I never ask if i can go and they never ask anything..I help my mother at the check in and go back without any problem. We did not even know that we were not allowed to go this far...

Was this at T1? You have to scan everything before getting into the check in area. Last time I tried to accompany my daughter who was travelling out of T1 they would not let me through, even though the place was empty and deserted. I was really upset but could not do a thing! I always go through with my parents - maybe they are more flexible with elderly travellers I've never tried with younger travellers

Sadly there are more and mores stories coming out of Dubai about petty thefts, I am sure you are right - they thought they could get away with it.

It was the terminal for Air France. I go through each time witout any problem, and if Dentro does not trust me, please free to try... My mother had a very heavy suitcase and we always help her. But that was not the point of my post. The belt was an expensive one, and i am pretty sure that the guy from the security thought that i was going to take a plane and will not stand stand there for 10 minutes and request to see the police for a belt. He was so rude with me. Any way, this guy showed up with my belt and left. The all situation was totally absurd.
