Hi everyone. Apologies for dragging up an 'old' thread, but I don't have time to look for any more recent ones. Our premier keeps saying the rebuilding from this disaster will be of post war proportions. Our state is devastated, the death toll grows, agricultural, industrial and massive mining areas have been wiped out. Our economy is going to be a mess for years. People are fighting over bottles of milk in the supermarkets (and I'm not even in a flood affected area!!!) I heard yesterday that the land area affected by flooding, some of which has now been going on for 22 days, is equivalent to the size of England...NINE TIMES OVER. 75% of our massive state is now under water or just beginning the clean-up. Northern New South Wales is now beginning to receive the flood water so more families, more communities to be devastated. Bl**dy selfish, d*ckhead *rseholes are looting people's homes and businesses. Some other fricken t*ssers in WA are deliberately lighting fires and people there are losing their homes. Our country is going through enough. Kim67 - I hope you and your loved ones are ok. CT, I hope your sister got away safely. Advice Seeker, unless you're ready to put on your wellies and start helping people to get back in their homes, I'd steer clear of my beautiful home right now. NOTHING here is going to be the same for a long, long time. In a year or so, I hope anyone that can will consider amazing Queensland as a holiday destination. Come and spend some dollars here and help us rebuild. ETA - oops! Thank you for all of the well wishes! :) edited by Green-ish on 13/01/2011

Kim67 & Green-ish and all the Queenslanders on this board! I don't even have the words! A rare thing for me... some of the footage today is horrifying to say the least! Stay safe and as dry as possible... I hope the rain lets up soon and you do not suffer too much damage. Cheers! FAMN

basil, authorities are expecting the river to peak Thursday at levels higher than the 1974 floods. Flooding in all other areas has been worse than 1974. What happened in Toowoomba yesterday is nothing like they've ever seen in Queensland before. It'll be interesting to see how much of the city goes under.

I'm meant to be heading to brisbane in the next two weeks and am thinking it may not be such a good idea:\:

I lived in Brisbane during the 74 floods and photos I'm getting from friends now show how bad it is but nothing like then. Toowoomba and Gatton are worst hit and so that means vegetable prices will be sky high soon as that is where most are grown. To think that all the dams were nearly empty just a year ago

Stay safe QLD ladies. The images on the BBC this morning are shocking, can't believe it is like that in QLD. My parents are in Hervey Bay and thankfully they are safe and the town is quite unaffected (being on the sea) despite being only a short distance from some of these towns that are massively affected. My mum said this morning though that the supermarket shelves are looking empty due to panic buying as the highway from Brisbane is cut-off and so the trucks won't be able to get through with food soon. Thoughts are with everyone in Queensland.

Thinking of all you ladies with family and friends in Queensland, my son and family are safely in lovely Perth, I can only begin to imagine how I would be feeling otherwise. Stay dry green-ish and all you other girls caught up in this nightmare.

My younger sister and partner were in Rockhampton. The house they were renting is a complete write off. They were staying with friends in a safer area but given how bad it is I bought tickets last night for them to fly to Perth until it is over. Queensland has been through enough in the last 5 years. Devastating :(

Stay safe Green-ish. Just got back from spending hours trying to get supplies, the shops are out of water and a lot of canned food (our suburb is in the flood zone though so people are panicking). I will be staying home now for the next few days and hoping for the best.

Like Kim said below...it has simply not stopped raining here. We've been back in Aus for almost three months and have literally had five days of no rainfall since we got here. I'm on the 'Sunshine' Coast, stranded at home with the three little ones, fridge broken, no car and husband can't get home. If I serve pasta or rice to my kids one more time I think there will be mutiny. Lol. Pizza boy got through last night so we owe him big time! I have never in my life seen rain like this. The ground is so wet where we are that a massive tree fell down over the road an hour ago. We have similar trees all around the house, close enough to land on it so I'm officially getting nervous. I may have to ask a neighbour with a 4WD to give the children and I a lift to my Mum's house...not that her area is any drier but at least a tree won't fall on it! I feel sick watching the footage on TV. I can't stand our state premier but I really felt for her this morning. She just looks genuinely distressed that she can't get enough rescue teams to help people who are stranded on their roof or in cars somewhere. It's just indescribably awful.

I am a Perth Girl... where it is hot and sunny and still with empty dams and water restrictions... who has lived in Dubai for many years now and and has kids that go and run around and dance in the rain it is so rare here in Dubai! It is hard to imagine the volumes and the destructive power of the water in QLD at the moment. I have several friends I am keeping in touch with in FNQ, Central, Sunshine Coast and BNE at the moment... all seem wet beyone belief! So sad to hear about the large loss of life today in Toowoomba. Here's hoping the rain stops soon... and keep dry Kim67!!

Well Brissy girls, it's been a horrible day in SE Queensland today. Toowoomba was hit with flash flooding, killing at least seven with more missing. Dalby, Chinchilla and surrounding towns have all been evacuated again tonight with more flash flooding expected in those areas. The Brisbane City and it's river suburbs (including mine - though we are very high up) are due to start flooding on Wednesday due to a high tide starting Tuesday afternoon.

We haven't to Wivenhoe yet BuymeaPony, it looks incredible on tv. Got family coming on Wednesday so hopefully go out and have a look then. Definitely a big contrast to Dubai. Wuffles, was down in Melbourne a month ago as great niece was having some risky surgery at Monash - couldn't believe how cold and wet it was.

Kim, I guess that would be a bit of a contrast to Dubai. Have you taken a trip out to see the Wivenhoe Dam spillway? We went there on New Year's Day with our kids and it was incredible. The last time we were out there the state was in drought so the dam was practically dry and the spillway empty. Now they have all the gates open. The noise and the spray are incredible. The kids loved it - good for a day trip if you are tired of sitting indoors watching the water continue to fall.

it's just non-stop. Have been back in Brisbane three months today and it hasn't stopped raining since we arrived. The last couple of weeks have been really heavy though - apparently it's as bad, if not worse, than the 1974 floods. The only saving grace is the new dams that have been built since then, hopefully they will hold up and Brisbane city will be spared. We're pretty high up in our suburb but the ground is just so soaking and wet that I hope the houses don't start toppling over like some have up the coast. Hope it stops soon-it has been unseasonably wet down in Melbourne too-but nothing like as bad thank goodness-3 months of rain must be very hard to handle

Yes, they are now saying the area that is flooded is as large as France and Germany put together. What a crappy school holidays for so many people. It's hard to believe it could rain so hard for so long.

Still raining heavily in Queensland and more of the state is going under water each day. Apparently as bad as the 1974 floods, hopefully the dams they've built since then will hold up and we won't be swimming around the neighbourhood here in Brisbane too.

All the fireworks were FAB.... but I think we also need to remember the people that are currently under water- particularly in Queensland! This news article and picture really gives the perspective... Yikes! http://www.news.com.au/national/thousands-forced-from-homes-military-help-called-in-as-flood-crisis-deepens/story-e6frfkvr-1225979694261
